Description Jean Grey has always been a favorite character of mine, so while I was somewhat pessimistic about her return to life in the comics (I mean, let her rest, you know? We already had the younger, time-displaced version of her running around), I was kind of excited to see her leading the X-Men: Red team.

Unfortunately, I think Marvel missed out on a grand opportunity to really make the team name have some oomph, so... here is my idea of where they should have gone with the X-Men: Red team.

See? I make jokes. And then I take three weeks to draw the visuals, because unless you know they're all redheads, it's a pretty terrible joke. But anyway, here we have, from left to right, the original Jean Grey, her daughter Rachel Summers (aka Prestige), Angelica Jones (aka Firestar), Hope Summers, the Irish superhero Molly Fitzgerald (aka Shamrock), and the previously mentioned young, time-displaced Jean Grey. Technically, Molly isn't a mutant -- she's more of a mystical hero, but I've just always been a fan/amused by her existence (seriously, her superpower is that she's lucky. She's one drinking problem away from hitting "The Quiet Man" levels of Irish stereotyping), so she's on the team. Given she last saw action in the '90s, I tweaked her terrible costume a bit. Her hoodie actually has a Shamrock on it, too, but Young Jean wound up blocking it.

I started out trying to emulate the simple shading/highlighting style of Audrey Mok, but, as I moved on, my usual approach to things seems to have taken over, until we wind up with Young Jean being pretty much all me. If nothing else, I think this piece taught me to just do my own thing, and stop trying to emulate others. Learn from them, sure, but be true to me, too. (In all honesty, I keep trying styles that I hope will let me work quicker... but that's never been the case so far.)

So, that's all there is to it. I wish I could have done something more dynamic, but... this really was supposed to be a quick-hit type of thing. I did not expect to start it in January and finish it this late in February. But let me know what you think -- as always, comments, critiques, and advice are more than appreciated!

Disclaimer: I’m red-green colorblind. Because of this, it’s difficult for me to tell similar shades/hues of different colors apart, and, therefore, I need to work with very limited palettes when I color pieces. For shading and highlights, I’ll generally adjust the ‘value’ portion of the HSV setting to make the base color lighter or darker; I’m unable to ‘cool’ shadows by adding blue or anything like that. I’ve often been told to be bolder in my highlighting and shading, and I’m trying to be so, but… sometimes it still seems pretty tame. I’m just saying this in case you mentioned I need to do that on a previous piece – I’m not ignoring you, and I appreciate the input. It’s just not very easy for me to implement confidently.

(Also, all featured characters belong to Marvel)

I love the accurate anatomy and the poses, they really speak about the character! My only thought is the effects firestar has. I love the variation of the characters, and the balancing tones you incorporated into this. The particles she is holding (i'm not sure if it is supposed to be not releasing light) look very different from the style of the piece. Next time you could add a glow or something. It's casual and I like that about it. The shading is also very simple and the colours aren't over-saturated. The one thing I think could be done, and I know a lot of others have said this, but I can't really see the name clearly. Their faces look all unique and they have different eyebrow shapes! The thing I love most is the subtle feel of the piece. Very laid-back. I don't know the marvel crew very well, but from an outsider's point of view, it looks amazing! Congrats! This is a brilliant piece!

Thank you for taking the time to comment!

I totally get what you're saying about Firestar's flare -- I was completely befuddled as to how I could depict the microwaves she emits. Flames would have been easy... but microwaves? So I just went with what you see there. No idea how to draw them "simpler", you know?

I'm so glad the overall casual feel came across -- that's definitely what I was aiming for. Even if I'd tried to make them all serious and dramatic, I think I'd have to draw at least one of them trying to bite back a chuckle at how ridiculous it'd look.

Than you again -- I really appreciate the input!

As a huge X-Fan, I love this concept and piece! I've also always stanned Firestar. So it's cool to see her on the team.

I think one of my favorite parts about this is their poses and expressions. It's almost a "someone grabbed a camera and gathered them for a group shot." Nice and casual. Young Jean's biting her lip with her hand to her chin is so endearing! Both her and Firestar's poses are especially fun.

I would like to be able to see the team name clearly. It's a clever concept! It deserves to be front and center.

It's nice how you balanced a lot of red on the left with a lot of green on the right. I admire, too, how you rendered each character's face. No Same Face Syndrome here, thank heavens! You could maybe shade their faces more for a bit of three-dimensionality, but I do believe that is a personal style choice. It needn't be "overdone." It could be minimal cel shading similar to what you did on their bodies.

Firestar's little fire puff is a great touch! I really enjoy this work as a whole. I think it's a well-done execution of a witty idea. Bravo!

Thank you so much for taking the time to comment!

I have to admit to being pretty proud of how young Jean turned out -- I wanted to set her apart from Old Jean in something more than a superficial way, and having her be a little unsure seemed to be a good way of doing that.

Shading faces seems to be a huge issue for me -- At some point I'll actually get it right, but whenever I try to go darker it always throws me off a bit. I don't know why... I think I'm just really sensitive to it seeming to come off a bit harsh. I'll need to get over that some day.

Thank you again -- I really appreciate it!

I know I'm always bagging on about how your facial diversity is improving of late, but holy damn, with all of these ladies side-by side, the differences in bone-structure and the composition of the eye itself rally leap out at me. It's a massively honed skill that even Disney seem to have trouble mastering when it comes to drawing up females in digital animation, their body shapes are also somewhat different from one another--Which shows even with all that groovy lycra-- and for that you should really give yourself a pat on the back. Enormous props for drawing so many people in one picture. You might have an undo button, but that doesn't make limited space and composition any easier. This looks absolutely spectacular.  I feel as if any official marvel website would be happy to have this as a banner for their X-men page.

Thank you! It was fun to try to make them all look different, but, in some cases, still sort of similar (especially the two Jeans on the ends). Especially since they're all redheads with green eyes (obviously I planned on them all having red hair from the start; I didn't realize Marvel was so partial to characters having green eyes, though), there has to be some differentiation there.

I'm hoping to give myself a bit of a break to do some simple stuff, but... we'll see!

Geez, and I thought MY Irish-American OC Superhero was a stereotype. But Shamrock here gives him a run for his money!

I'm genuinely surprised they didn't work some sort of leprechaun angle in there.

I know a few people that are red-green colorblind as well. It tends to be a pain and is troublesome.

To say the least! Especially when you enjoy drawing redheads who may or may not wear a lot of green.

Well I see what your saying since most people might have a thing for red heads of Irish descent and it tends to be a problem.
