Description
"Think of it as personality dialysis!" ^_^I saw "Wicked" for the second time a couple weeks ago, and I decided to do a little fan art dedicated to that oh-so-catchy, doesn't-stop-running-through-your-head song: "Popular"!
Painted in Photoshop CS2.

Tidbit from someone of Dorothy's home state:
L. Frank Baum based the witches on his sufferagist mother-in-law, Matilda Joslyn Gage (like Glinda in private, but like Elphaba when in public voicing her staunch opinions on women's liberation from men's dominance [the books attributed to Susan Anthony & Elizabeth Stanton basically stole some of Matilda's words, since the two ladies who were listed as top women's liberators actually just did it for the...well...popularity, whereas Matilda truly believed in the cause, yet was never really credited for her share, much like how Elphaba was praised in some circles, yet downright shut out in others, since the whole fight to protect sentient animals is akin to women fighting for their say in the world during Matilda's time); come 1939 with the MGM film, in which we've got Billie Burke as Glinda & Margaret Hamilton as The Wicked Witch of the West, even the set of the film ran like the lives of the witches, with Billie waited on hand & foot due to her MGM history, whilst Margaret--one of the nicest people ever in the older Hollywood days--was treated like a real witch (though Judy & Terry loved her [ironic, Dorothy & Toto being fond of the supposed baddie of the film], Billie & higher management at the time seemingly snubbed her whilst Maggie was filming the role [talk about being in character]); the 1939 designs naturally inspired Gregory Maguire to pen Wicked as a novel in 1995, but it never really took off as it did until the early 00s when rumors of it becoming a Broadway musical began circulating; by 2003, the musical was a smashing success, thanks to Idina Menzel as the now beloved outcast Elphaba (a stark contrast to the black & white of both Baum's time & the 1939 film's heyday) & Kristin Chenoweth as successful ditz Glinda.

Gosh, this is so cute!! I love how Elphie looks like she's about to roll her eyes. Popular is probably my favorite song in all of Broadway World.

The musical differs from the book in some key ways, but I still enjoyed it very much. It was a lot of fun! ^_^

Some? One gives Elphie a happy ending when--per tradition--she's supposed to melt away & the other kills her off. with her love situation between Glinda & Fiyero being Shakespearean in nature.
