I don't draw half bad, but it takes hours

Anyway! I found this fun to read
And, you make good points, like the villain issue, that most are too silly.

Haven't gotten to the book about Mariel yet, and now I'm not sure if I want to xD

Minion-of-Misery2 [2009-12-09 03:24:10 +0000 UTC]

Haha this made me feel better, Mariel's the only Redwall female that's always annoyed me. Well, I take that back, Winifred always kinda bored me too.

I haven't read any of the new books though (I think the most recent one I've read is Taggerung). Are there any after that that're worth a read? Or should I just stick with re-reading the earlier ones?

And now I feel guilty cause I actually like Plugg.

Kobb In reply to Minion-of-Misery2 [2009-12-16 06:24:44 +0000 UTC]

The more recent ones haven't been so great. Taggerung is all right, but after that they kinda went downhill. Even if you give them a try, don't bother with Loamhedge. The books after it got a little better, but I think it's the worst Redwall book. :/

Minion-of-Misery2 In reply to Kobb [2009-12-17 00:02:32 +0000 UTC]

Loamhedge? Is that the one with the hare in the wheelchair? I've heard about that one and I wasn't planning on reading it (I'm afraid it will involve some horrifyingly convenient cure in the end). Oh, I just remembered that I've read Triss and I liked that one, though Scarum is the only hare in the whole series that disgusts me.

I remember in primary school we had the writer of redwall as a special guest speaker, Lol i didn't know who he was at the time sooo yhea, umm. He gave me a signed bookmark but again, didn't know who he was and eventualy lost the bookmark (I was like 7 ! ! ! )

Temiree [2009-09-24 05:03:10 +0000 UTC]

I'd do this, but my Redwall memory has faded so much. I haven't completed a book in years. I'm having more fun drawing/painting stuff based on it. Is that weird?

Good to see your drawing of Tagg though! He's a big reason why otters are my favorite species for Redwall, and in general. (he's my favorite character if you can't already tell) I wouldn't be surprised if he inspired my character Temiree too. xD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Kobb In reply to Temiree [2009-09-24 17:51:24 +0000 UTC]

Hah! Probably not. The new ones haven't been that impressive, even if several of the earliest books were truly great. It's the world we love to art around in, after all. X)

I do like Tagg, though I thought Taggerung had some serious problems with it. So I kinda have this rose-colored mental version of him where the way he acts makes more sense. However, his run up from the Abbey cellars is probably one of, if not THE coolest scene in the entire series.

Kobb In reply to Creyn [2010-10-01 21:24:02 +0000 UTC]

Plugg Firetail, fox pirate captain. So named because he was an otherwise gray fox with a flame-red tail, and he was super proud of it. Yeah, he lost his tail during the book and spent the rest of the time trying to glue it back on with hot pine resin. Forgetting how completely futile that would be... ouch.

Thanks!

My favorites are Mossflower, Martin the Warrior, and Salamandastron. I'd definitely recommend them.

Traxer [2009-09-23 09:10:43 +0000 UTC]

I knew I wasn't the only one who was made to twitch by Mariel's dialogue.

And Mask is made of win. How come he lasted so short a period? And have to admit the smart baddies always made it more interesting. Ah, Salamandastron...

And there be plenty of otterness all around. w00t!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Kobb In reply to Traxer [2009-09-24 20:59:39 +0000 UTC]

Overall Mariel just bugs me. She was just so rough and unappealing. Which makes Mariel of Redwall the exception to the otherwise sound declaration that "the early Redwall books are all good."

Salamandastron is really high up on my list - probably jockeying with Martin the Warrior for second place. Ferahgo was one of the best villains in the series, and Klitch a worthy foil.

Traxer In reply to Kobb [2009-10-01 12:51:53 +0000 UTC]

Well, the one thing Mariel of Redwall did lay groundwork for was the sequel, The Bellmaker, which had a lot more going for it: various characters made of awesome (I have a weak spot for Egbert), intriguing villains who actually conquered a stronghold, a brand new setting, and various other items. Pity BJ never mentioned Southward again...had some fun possibles.

And yus. Never can go wrong with proper weasel villains. I think I made a tin foil inlaid sword in high school report for that book...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Kobb In reply to Traxer [2009-10-01 18:04:57 +0000 UTC]

Bellmaker was absolutely rad - it had SO much going for it. I'll have to reread both sometime and see if it's because Mariel is better-written in Bellmaker or if it's because she has less "screentime." Because you also have Rab Streambattle, Finbarr, Southsward, Urgan Nagru, Egbert... even Blaggut who broke BJ's supposed cardinal rule in the most epic of ways. The book is up there with my favorites, for sure.

I think my favorite character in Mariel was... Graypatch. Always thought the fire-swingers attack was awesome as a kid.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Traxer In reply to Kobb [2009-10-01 23:15:12 +0000 UTC]

I have to admit Blaggut was exceptional...

Still one of my favorite moments of the series was when Egbert pops up and confuses everyone by speaking normally. And I believe this was one of those that actually made me tear up in a character death...that seadog was awesome...

Good 'gates, I have to admit thinking of these books almost makes me want to start a Redwall reading club deal for no reason to motivate me to dive back into those old tomes. Update myself on the details and such...

Ahh gosh, I totally understand your love for the otters. I think the Skippers have been my favorite characters from Redwall, though I did like the Marlfoxes a bit.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Kobb In reply to Neikoish [2009-09-24 21:02:28 +0000 UTC]

Some Skippers fail to really stand out, though the one from Doomwyte was easily the best character in that book (unfortunately nt a terribly difficult feat). Long Patrol's Skipper was rad, and my favorite of course is the one from Mossflower...

Oh otters! They are just amazing, is all. X)
