Description I've had this mini tutorial up on my tumblr for a long while, but I never actually posted it on dA.

If you don't have Lumi&Shade you have an older version of SAI.
You can create a similar effect with black lines and the overlay blendmode if you play around with it a little.

I don't get it, this didn't work. Do you lumi shade it on your main lineart layer or do you make a new layer, add a grey color, and then lumi shade it ?

I made my main lineart layer gray except for the eyes and parts I which would remain black and set it to lumi shade. The effectiveness of this depends on if there is colour underneath the lines and how thick the lineartΒ is.

What's the blend mode?

Blend mode is a setting for a layer that has an effect on the layers below it. Examples are Multiply and Screen.

Oh, ok! It just says mode on my version of Sai, so I was a little confused!

What brushes do you use for colouring and texture? ^_^

Is there a way to do this in Paint tool Krita?

Sorry for asking, but where can I change the greyscale? My Sai is in Spanish so sometimes I canΒ΄t find all the things explained in other tutorials ;_;

Above the colour wheel are buttons for sliders. you can choose your grey there. You can also mess around with filter hue/saturation/luminosity and tinker with the thirst slider.

Do you shade with colors Β and lumi shade the lines only or make a grayscale behind and lumi shade the lines and colors.

Konett In reply to ShadowingX [2016-07-21 22:20:22 +0000 UTC]

I do the first, but you can also do the second.
If you add a colorfilled lumi shade layer over greyscale image, and adjust the colours with hue/saturation you can get some pretty good results.

Oh do you colorfill the base colors or do them by hand, because i tend to have problems with lumi shade where sometimes half the line only gets colored and the others remain black like there was no lumi shade at all.

I use the invert selection method. You select everything outside of the character, invert the selection and then fill it. If it still leaves some lines outside the fill, then I duplicate the line art and merge it with the fill layer. I clip the colour layers to the fill layer and work from there. I cut parts that I don't want to be affected by the lumi shade (ie. eyes) out of the line art for their own separateΒ layers.

Damn, I use SAI for 2 years now, and never thought about trying to do this.
Thank you for this tutorial, I will use this method because I like my lineart to be colorful!
