Description
My mom commissioned me to do this for her former employer. She's of native american heritage, but my mom failed to recall either the people she's descended from or her spirit animal (she does, in fact, have a spirit animal).
We decided that it might very well be the bear.
I took this from part of a legend about a man who, in visiting with a council of bears is transformed into one himself. He dies in the end but... well... so do we all
(micron pen, watercolor)

This is a magical piece of artwork. I absolutely love it! I have a social network called Ursa Freedom Project, which advances the agenda for bear conservation through story and art. Can I put this piece of art on the Ursa network to share with others? And I would like to invite you to join Ursa Freedom Project too. We have many artists who raise awareness about bears through their artwork.

This is very pretty. Vibrant expression, warm scene, good tones...wonderful. The style reminds me of the Disney bears in "Brother Bear".

Very cool! The composition is very dynamic and I love how you achieved a sense of depth of field, and how it really puts focus on the white bear.. Very cool! All the gestures are magnificent and very expressive. It really makes you wonder what they're talking about and whatnot. ^_^ Bravo!

You've created really wonderful atmosphere in this piece. Love the white bear especially.. his costume, lighting and expression. I like the framing with the two silhouetted bears in the foreground, but I can see what Khylov is saying. I almost want to see more of them, thus framing the image and the white bear/fire more intimately. I think it would draw us into the picture more and enhance the mystical secretive nature of the meeting told in the story.

I wanted to do something like this for me and my sibs... there are six of us altogether. Except, we'd be wolves of cherokee descent. How much would you/did you charge?

koosh-llama In reply to discordwolf [2004-09-06 02:40:52 +0000 UTC]
usually depending on size, complexity and medium i'd charge anywhere from $35-$55. But this was for my mom so.... i called it a gift

Hah. This is the difference between you and I (aside from the talent gap) - you love your mother. Me? Not so much. She wants me to do a ton of caricatures for her. I'm charging her $40 for the lot of them. She gets a discount, not a gift.

koosh-llama In reply to discordwolf [2004-09-06 08:22:37 +0000 UTC]
well, i was thinking of doing the discount thing, but then it occured to me that she is KINDA paying my college tuition, and covering all kinds of crazy expenses... it's really the least i could do.

Beautiful. The way you did the flame is just great, it's as if it's there, the center of attention, but also blends in to become one with the bears. Though not very detailed, I can tell you put effort into this.

UNTRUE! I'm terrified of bears.
CONSIDER!
I heard weird sounds in the middle of the night. My sister, Chelsea, and I were terrified. We each assumed the worse.
My sister thought it was a ghost(!).
Chelsea thought it was a thief breaking into the house.
I thought it was a bear! After my sweet, sweet Cheez-its!
In conclusion:
This picture is awesome.

Khylov [2004-09-05 06:44:01 +0000 UTC]
Very nice color, very nice brush strokes evident within the overall pic, texturing the background and the charaters. The bears' expression is very appealing; many lines and angles that you chose for the facial architecture really accentuate the character. I like the silhouetted bears in the foreground; they break the frame and makes one feel more involved within the piece, like it was a snapshot of an event taking place. I had a critique on one point, but it's pretty minor. This is a very good production style shot, and I'd think that a film studio'd kill to have something of this caliber for whatever production they'd be doing. It's pieces like this that really inspire a film to go that extra step to become a deeper piece of cinema. Good work.

Just a little thing at that: Positioning of the two silhouetted forms on the far right and left, the two bears who have their backs turned to the viewer. Perhaps having the one on the left or right a bit closer to the viewer, and pushed a bit more outwards into the picture, so as to catch more of the shape and form of their head and shoulderline. I only say this because the two back-turned bears are evenly spaced, which is cool in a way, seeing that it almost makes it a frame of sorts on the edges of the picture. But with the great feeling you have already of the viewer intruding upon the scene, it might add more to that "eyewitness" feel by placing one of the characters strategically in an uneven position relative to the other bears, as well as to the viewers' POV (if that makes any sense). Like I said, small potatoes. Hope to see more production stills like this one!

They're very nice bears. The shading at some points seems a bit... off, I think. The angles on the white bear and the bear far to the right (the one not in silhouette) don't seem to match up with the lightsource. I really *like* the shading on the white bear, but it does seem off. (He also appears to have no feet. )
But very nice bears! And nice human, too.

light source? what's a light source?
feet? what're feet?
yeah, the lighting is off a bit. it was done in the wee hours, and kinda haphasardly. live and learn, it seems.
