Description
Nintendo recently announced the newest entry in the Paper Mario series! Aaaannd it's Sticker Star 2...I'll admit, I'm actually in the minority of the people who enjoyed SS. It's arguably one of the most gorgeous games you can play on 3DS. And you gotta love that jazz soundtrack too. That being said, it's nowhere near as good as the first two entries.
Game does look pretty good though. And to be fair, it's probably best to give Nintendo and Intelligent Systems more time to prove otherwise, but then again, they should've made that clear from the get go. Would definitely be nice to see them stop experimenting with this franchise and just go back to its roots.
We can only hope that the game's filled with more than just plain ol' Toads this time around.

Color Splash is amazing, and I think it's better than TTYD.

I'll be honest. I played Color Splash first and not only did the game feel less rushed than Sticker Star, I actually grew to like certain characters and even some of the Toads. The writing and some designs made them endearing and Huey is easily one of my favorite subtle partners as well as the game having a clever level up system.
Sticker Star feels rushed, has pointless battles, has the worst and most repugnant partner I've ever seen, Kersti and while that game looks and sounds beautiful, it lacks in substance and unlike Color Splash, I was miserable during my experience with it.

Shouldn't Mario be red with anger at the Paper Mario fanbase rather than Intelligent Systems?

I know this is actually too late to comment here, but I love how Mario (in his paper form) takes out a giant hammer and chases the logo in anger, Michael Myers style, while shouting, "Arrgh! I'm gonna kill you for this!" Or... something like that.

Sticker Star 2 is the Nickname for Paper Mario: Color Splash due to the similarity between both latters.

Intelligent Systems is not to blame. The truth is the old staffs from Intelligent Systems have been replaced by new ones who have insufficient experiences on the Paper Mario series.
Now Iwata is gone. Region locking has also come to an end. I think Kimishima will have his choice.

I understand your frustration. But let me get to the bottom of this and shed some light on where the roots of Mario as a whole really lie.
From the beginning, the most important thing about Mario has always been resonance. Every Mario creation ― whether in platformers, action adventures, puzzle games, racing, sports, RPGs, parties, or any other video game genre; or in film, television, or print; or even in unauthorized fan media ― must ALWAYS resonate with all segments of its audience: both kids and adults, and both novices and the experienced. That is what Shigeru Miyamoto had in mind when he and his colleagues at Nintendo were conceiving and developing the Mario series. In short: Resonance is the core of what Mario is as a franchise and as a character.
What’s the most important thing when it comes to Mario games? It’s not genre classification, or storytelling, or characters, or settings, or graphics, or sound, or the gameplay rules, or how the concepts are executed, or even the technical specifications of the console or handheld itself. From the beginning, all development of Mario franchise games has been focused on having fun. As the late Satoru Iwata said: “It should be our goal, each of us, to reach the new players as well as the current players. Our goal is to show them surprise. Our reward is to convince them that above all video games are meant to be just one thing: fun. Fun for everyone.”

Yeah, just because gameplay matters 60% in games must mean half assed everything else right? 10/10 Perfect game!!!!!!!
Cut the bullshit! Comparing the platforming games to the Mario spinoffs is like comparing the main Pokemon games to Pokemon Mystery Dungeon. An epic story works for one, but not another. The Mario RPGs uses a different formula.
To the people saying "Let just wait before we judge it" Are you guys blind? The game is obviously Sticker Star 2.

Very well said! It's definitely true that the enjoyment of playing these games is what matters the most. That's where Nintendo shine. I just think that there's room for both. They can create a game that resonates with every corner of their audience, a game that has its core ideas executed in very unique ways. But there's also room for more. There's also room for crafting compelling stories and utilize the more complex little pieces that together establishes the reason to why this series is so beloved. It's a different kind of fun. Going back to Paper Mario's roots wouldn't take away the enjoyment nor limit the audience so there's really no point in taking that away.
Once again, we have to see more of the game before we can judge it. I'm staying optimistic, and I'm pretty sure I'll end up enjoying it anyway. But I would've preferred something closer to the older installments.

Haven't played Sticker Star... Don't have a 3DS. That said I'm still not happy with the changes. I'm sure it's pretty okay on its own merits, but it doesn't have either the gameplay or charming, compelling characters of the other games. I'm hoping that Color Splash has some of that hidden in it, but... Well, it really does seem like it's going to be a letdown. Only time will tell, though.

It's as if Nintendo feels the pressure to always innovate, or drastically change things up with the Paper Mario series. Surely changes can be interesting, but it's frustrating when change somehow equals in the need of removing something fundamental. It's just not the same, and that's too bad!

I heard the game is only like Sticker Star due for the game being the best selling Paper Mario game in Japan, and since it's by a Japanese developer I can see why.

Gameb9oy In reply to ToxicIsland [2016-03-07 15:43:12 +0000 UTC]
It's always the Japanese audience that pressures them into decisions. I mean, if Star Fox and F-Zero had only sold well in Japan, we'd have no shortage of those games. I'll never understand why Nintendo is hesitant to create games for international audiences. I mean, look at Gamefreak. They have to deal with Yo-Kai watch stealing most of their market in Japan, so they are making new regions that are based off of places outside of Japan. It's a small thing, but you know fans in the areas that Unova and Kalos are based on have to find it cool that they're world has transported to the Pokemon world as well.

I'm also guessing this is why Mother 3 is struggling to come to America, since Japan hates it, like we hate Tingle. Seeing as their's now a new Nintendo president I'm guessing this time there be more Nintendo stuff that appeal's to American's in the future.

Gameb9oy In reply to ToxicIsland [2016-03-07 21:47:53 +0000 UTC]
Ah, mother 3, why is it that all the games people want but can't get have that number in their title? From what little I've seen of the new president, he seems interested in releasing more games that have appeal internationally, so that's definitely in our favor. To be honest, I'm hoping he can get the latest Ace Attorney games to be brought over here just as much as you probably want mother 3

So do you think a new animated Mario film will appeal more to American audiences than Japanese ones?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Gameb9oy In reply to ToxicIsland [2016-03-08 05:46:14 +0000 UTC]
Um, I really don't know. If you search a little bit on the Internet, you'll find that both Japan and America created some pretty dumb animated works when Mario was still just getting popular, and considering everyone knows that with the exception of Wreak-It Ralph, all movies based around/on video games suck as a general rule, I doubt either side will be eagar to see a movie like that. Of the two, I think the Japanese would have a better chance of going to see it since they didn't have to experience the live-action Super Mario bros movie we got here in America.

I enjoyed Sticker Star too, but I could not understand why Nintendo decided to remove the experience point system. Mario does not level up at all making the battles almost entirely useless (save for the coins).
I also saw some footage of this new Paper Mario game, and I noticed something terrible: when Mario attacks, he does not inflict damage at all to enemies... and with that I mean the number of damage points that usually appears in all Paper Mario games. They probably removed that too!
It will be a cool game, that's for sure, but sadly, Paper Mario is not an RPG anymore. :/

Actually noticed that too. Would be so weird for them to just take that away Like with everything else, it may be something that they're experimenting with. We'll have to see more of what that is all about.

I remember seeing in one of the trailers that one of the enemies was not fully colored as Mario fought him. The enemies probably lose color to indicate how much damage they've taken.

Kopejo In reply to Gameb9oy [2016-03-07 16:25:02 +0000 UTC]
That's what I've been thinking. There's also another indicator when Mario uses his hammer and you can see the enemies become black and white (very subtle though). My only worry is that it might be kinda tricky to see the precise amount of HP left. Maybe this system applies to Mario aswell, even with the fact that he has an HP-counter. We'll have to see!
