Of the deities of music, Octavia's approach is the grandest. I agree with what others have said, this image has a really poignant symbolism (whether intended or not). The stark simplicity of the chalk drawing contrasts against the dream of being an alicorn, and makes it stand out even more. It feels more bittersweet because the simple chalk drawing is so far from reality.
When I first saw the picture, though, another interpretation popped into my mind: that the pony had just been been "visited" by an alicorn who left the marks in the wall with his/her wings. (I blame Rule 34!)

Almost one year later, this is still probably the single most poignant, poetic works of pony art out there.
When examples of unachievable immortality walk and talk among you, your own mortality becomes all the more bittersweet, and expressions of that longing will take on an urgency that sometimes has equal beauty. Imagine how Celestia might react if she saw this moment, understanding all too well where it came from.

This is pure genius. I saw this picture forever ago and just today I finally found it on dA. I even made a shirt with it because of how much I loved it. It symbolizes so much... a simple pony who wants to be so much more. Very, very well done my friend.

I have to say that what I really like in this pic is the whole idea and how you draw it. I know that "earth ponies would like to be something other" is a bit of "normal" idea, nothing new BUT i liked how you showed it. Not, by some halo that shows round pony or some faint lines that show up from don't know why (although I like the pistures with mystical accents). You resolved to old graffities that were done in chalk other days. That what's make it something that stands out. It's hard to make a sketchy type of drawing especially when she is all in dark colors, but still you make it looks good. But the best is the chalk drawing on wall. You picked the right brush and made it not so regular just as most of pic on wall are done. Great work
