Actually, given how much more limited her unicorn magic was compared to Twilight's normal usage, most of the fanbase assumed she was in fact a Pegasus before the comic came out, because that made more sense than any of the alternatives with what we knew at the time. Also, obligatory "the comics cannot beΒ canon, because they contradict the actual show multiple times" spiel here.

Perhaps, but the Power Pony comics are a comic within a comic/show, so their depiction in the 2014 Annual issue is more than likely canon on that front.

I mean, it doesn'tΒ contradict anything in canon. I'm not sure that it would even be possible for itΒ to do so, as it'sΒ in-universe fiction and thus any breaks in canon could be construed as in-universe failures in the vein of Hawkman's everything. The wayΒ that pointΒ was segregated from the rest should have clued you in to the fact that I didn't see it as relevant to this particular case.
