I usually use tinted gray on a layer that is set to multiply or linear burn. You can see it in the PSD file of Cadance and in my "Let's paint" videos on youtube.

It would be beyond epic if Celestia began to teach Twilight about dark magic, with the introduction of King Sombra. She did mention Twilight would be 'ready for the next step'; if that's so, perhaps learning of the darkest of magics is one of those things. Not to use much obviously, I'm Celestia would more or less forbid it's use unless the situation demands it, but Twi's gotta learn all about it at some point. Her cutie mark/purpose -is- magic after all.

I can't write a Critique; I am not artist myself and do not feel right criticizing the works of others. About the quote and general concept it is exactly how I myself approach the concept of an ultimate good or an ultimate evil. Could one imagine a demon that acknowledges its existence because of light? A darkness so inexplicably pure that in stunning contrast it does not yield but is strengthened by pure light? How is one to stand against such unhindered trancendance? I just made up a word but I think you understand what I mean....
