One of my headcanons is that much of the guard force does not like Spike at all (particularly in consideration of the events of "Cutie Mark Chronicles"). At best, they consider him a walking, talking safety hazard; at worst, he's a "timebomb" ready to "blow up" because of his species' instincts.
Shining, of course, isn't one of that number and does the whole "big bro" thing with Spike once he's old enough to actually appreciate it.

Hatchling Spike has never looked so adorable, not even in the show itself. That guard is clearly not good with kids.

Obviously the drawing is awesome. I'm more curious about the background. They were all given so much right color and the background is so bland/blurred. It looks good, but I'm curious about the contrasting styles in one picture.

Firstly...my initals are KP as well...and I might steal your artwork and pretend it's mine. 
I went to make-up school to learn how to do special effects make-up for movies and what not (bear with me, this actually goes somewhere) and the make-up artists who taught the classes always said you could have bold lines as long as you never had bold edges. Blend. Blend. Blend.
Well, you have pretty much demonstrated that concept on the shading you did on Celestia, and for once in the 5 years I've been doing make-up, I had a lightbulb moment.
