Description
This basically is a quick explaination of how I draw dragon scales. (It doesnt mean its the right way. If YOU know, TELL ME! DThese scales are basically scales for a cuddly.. super green no-teeth dragon..
If you wanna do it more realistic, you should probably go for a bit more.. greenbrownish color-scheme than I did here.
But I'm attracted to colors, just like a crow, so you cant blame me. Dragon is GREEN, end of story

This helped me a lot, thanks!!!
though it's kinda hard doing that kind of scales with colorpencils, but I guess it's just about practice, right

Thank you for the tutorial!
I have only one question: How exactly do you smudge the one single line for extra shiny appearance? When I do it it never looks the same. What kind of brush do you use?

Very interesting, I'm trying out a similar technique on a mega piece i'm working on (essentially a different order of your process, and adding extra shadows etc.) but am I right in saying scales take waaaay too long to draw? Keep up the good work ^.=.^

Yeah you're absolutely right. It takes ALOT of time, atleast if you draw every, single scale by hand and don't use any brush or texture

Thanks. I'm just starting to try digital art. I wondered how you make the scales and or wings get that shiny effect. This is wonderful.

On step six, which layer is this? The scales, the middle layer or the lower layer?
Thanks for the help.

one question; what color do you do the scales in?darker green or black? or whatever
π: 0 β©: 1
Kraaku In reply to TheSilverSpirit [2011-05-14 18:47:16 +0000 UTC]
I usually try to use a darker shade of the base color. Black and white can be a bit tricky to blend, so for a green dragon I would use light green for highlights, and dark green for shades.

TheSilverSpirit In reply to Kraaku [2011-05-14 19:59:59 +0000 UTC]
so if you were doing a silver dragon would you do like a dark grey?
