As soon as I heard Carolina talking to the Director saying she 'owed him everything' I always imagined something like this. I especially like the idea of her having this caring side she walled off!

But to be honest, in the series I sometimes got the feeling she still has this somewhat soft side - that's the reason why I love her even more than Tex.
Furthermore I'm really tempted to draw some angsty pictures of the Director and Carolina (and the other freeelancers), but I'm not sure about that. I guess it could just get a bit too much of something good. D=

Draw what you feel like, I'd even love to see your cheap scribbles in notebooks.
I'm actually a bit iffy on the Project Freelancer. I normally hate female characterisation in whatever story because they're so 2d, but I liked Tex in BGC because even though she was a badass, she was also funny, greedy and prone to female jealousy (Actually, I like Sister and Pilot 479er beter then both) but as soon as she got to Revelation and then Project Freelancer she was like the other female Freelancers. Burnie set all their personalities to Angsty & Badass, and said 'fuck it, that'll do'. Your story gives Carolina that extra depth and humanity the series doesn't. That's why I like 479er, Wash and York. At least they're human and can crack a smile.

I got the feeling that even though all female freelancers are badasses, they're all different badasses.
Tex is just the a*hole-ish badass, Carolina is the nice badass, South is the I-want-to-and-that's-why-I-screw-up-badass.
But then again I tend to automatically add layers of my own ideas to characters I see in series like RvB, so it can be they really got flattened like that in the original series and I just didn't realise it because for me they're just so much more, with all the assciations I add in my mind.

*seesaws hand* Yeah, Tex is asshole badass, South is jealous-badass, CT is angsty-badass and Carolina is competitive-badass.... but that's it, it's so flat/. They're just not human enough for me to really get me to like them, a want a goofy female! It's why I adore the Gulchers. They prove anyone can be heroes, cometh the hour, cometh the man!
But you're right, they can only squeeze so much into a 'movie' so that's why I have high hopes for this series. They've laid the base and now they can can start showing off each characters les petites. I really like your character exposition, if they mentioned Carolina wanted to be a vet, or liked ice tea or had a brother who wore a skirt I could picture them so much more as people rather than movie caricatures.

I guess you right, but still I like that bunch of guys very much.
And I think it's hard to give such details away from the beginning: The freelancers are meant to be perfect weapons, killer machines, and they're trained not to show mercy or any feelings at all. I mean, of course they do, but in a very cryptic way, and much of it appears to be a mask.
So, to introduce these characters first you have to give an expression of this facade, this wall of badass they built around themselves, so you really get the difference between them and the Gulchers:
In Blood Gulch, life is relatively easy. They can roam free, live their way and are free to express themselves in most ways.
The freelancers don't have that. They don't want to go down, they have to be tough. They want to be seen, to be worth something? They have to fight each other and get better every day.
So in order to get to know them I think it is important to let them seem somewhat flat at first, so the watcher himself can have the feeling to slowly crack up their walls of mistrust and slowly get to the true character.
And I so hope too they'll now start to work with those characters. I'd really love to get to know them better.

Just imagine how awesome that would be!
Flying aoΒ΄round in space, kicking some ass, and finally getting killed and dying a painful death. Fun!
...or do I misunderstand something here?

This has to be one of the funnies, double misunderstandings I have read in a while, on a comments' section.
