Description

I was taking a look at my earlier design of this ship and realized that, like Maggie, I just can’t stand “no-neck monsters.” What I earlier thought was cool because it was low slung now looks slouchy and hunched to me. I decided to give her a fresh look, and also to fill in my notions behind the design.

As before, this is ispired by the beautiful Excelsior–Ingram class by Todd Guenther and Jason Genser, published by by Starstation Aurora in 1986.This was made in idraw on a ipad.

Here’s the fictional background:

The idea of a “sector-control cruiser” emerged in the late 23rd century, resulting in the bloated Excelsior and her sister ships. By 2305, however, Starfleet felt it needed an updated model; thus was born the Surety class.

The primary purpose of this class is to act as mobile command centers in areas of major conflict or crisis, coordinating and supporting tactical and/or relief operations. Each will be under the command of a commodore or rear admiral, with a captain in charge of normal ship operations. That separation of duties becomes essential only during crisis situations where the ranking officer cannot divide his or her attentions.

Each Surety-class cruiser will be continuously on station in its designated sector in case of emergency. Between emergencies, however, it will continue to serve a useful exploratory function. Each ship carries four 12-person warp-capable shuttles (or “runabouts,” as the wags at Starfleet Dockyards are calling them), which can be deployed from the mother ship to go off on various exploratory duties within a few light-years distance. Surety can also act as a colonization carrier/escort. The entire lower part of the secondary hull, below the “waterline” is devoted to shuttlecraft flight operations and cargo. The primary hull has surplus accommodation space for up to a thousand people. Its designers also feel that Surety will be a favored for “money shots” in Starfleet promotional materials—“Come Explore the Friendly Skies!” [Editor’s note: the preceding sentence should have said “beauty shots”].

The Federation Council has authorized the construction of six vessels in this class as of 2310.

Not sure which version I prefer. I really like the design, and the added details are great, but I think it looks better with the shorter neck, particularly because of the way the pylons look on the front/back view.

But any of the two versions are amazing designs anyway.

Thanks for the comments. I appreciate that you took the time to make them.
The pylons are my least favorite part of the updated design, too. I considered pulling the nacelles down to a medial position between the primary and secondary hulls, but did not like how it obscured the "interconnecting dorsal". One should never obscure a lovely neck. Why do you think Audrey Hepburn seldom wore collared blouses?

Yeah, I agree that it looks better with the nacelles higher. Overall I prefer the first version though, has a more tactical profile, like the original Ingram.
