Some piece of art long overdue. Damnit, I need to update more.Anyway, here's Trixie "fighting" against a fiery Balrog demon... and not doing a good job at it, either.
Trixie created by Lauren Faust and belongs to Hasrbo.
The Balrog belongs to J.R. Tolkien of Lord of the Rings fame.
Balrog design by me, though.

Ok I'm not being a troll here, I'm just pointing this out. The Balrog is supposed to have wings, does not have a collar or a belt, and has reptile like legs, has a tail, and his head is supposed to be more animal like.

If Wikipedia is remotely accurate on the subject it seems he originated the term. Not the concept as it's pretty obviously a common fiery demon archetype. In his case, given the way he and C.S. Lewis did things, it's a pretty obvious judeo-christian style demon complete with fall from an earlier angelic (Maiar) form. He also invented the modern orc or at least calling them orcs, though he borrowed the word or at least the sound (and a little bit of the meaning) from Anglo Saxon. As a constructed language maker almost any word Tolkien invented is related to some ancestor of modern English as part of his attempt to create a sort of English mythology.
