You know, it would help your point if anyone could understand what you're talking about. Grammar and spelling are your friends.

I seem to recall the American Revolution where professional soldiers lost against a bunch of regular guys with lesser equipment. Way to give up before you even start. All it takes is guts and determination, which apparently you lack.

You get rid of guns, and there is nothing to stop the government from exercising power over the people. Votes and education can't stop tyranny. Tyranny doesn't care about that, but it certainly cares if the people are carrying weapons behind their doors.

Fear of guns is ignorance. They are nothing but inanimate objects until wielded by people. Then they are an equalizer.

Allaow me to introduce you to a favorite friend of guns: fanatics. Are you ready to give your life to the cause of democracy? well, i am ready to bet that any paramilitaristic force supporting undemocratic forces are quite willing to give up their lives, for their cause, ergo they will prove to have what you value so much, guts, or more like inconscience.

Oh, and goverments should be afraid of the people, not the other way around, because as you clearly pointed out, when the people are against it, the goverment will have a hard time tackling them... it's when the country is divided (maybe thanks to propaganda?) that you get the military, supported by poeple's militia (fanatics, where fascists, "comunists", or yet to be seen, corporate security forces, any day soon on a third world's country, i expect) figthing the other half of the country which will most likelly be shunned, under organised, and hell, probably lot less well equipped.

guns will make it easier for both sides to figth, but civilisation will lose.

PD: and about freedom of guns, guns are nothing, but wielded by people they become power, and power corrupts, leads to abuse, etc. and sorry, i wouldn't put my trust on people, since there is a large minority who will be quite willing to harm, moved by egoism and lack of empathy, and thanks to guns they would have power.

Everything in that spiel is simplistic, mindless generalization. It's pointless to argue with that kind of reasoning, or lack there of.

The real problem this world has is overpopulation and no one's paying a damn bit of attention to it because it's easier to shrug it off and say that someone else can deal with it. We're stressing the planet and our resources, and we're stressing each other because there are too many of us.

Sooner or later humanity has to wake up to the fact that paramilitary forces and corrupt governments are the least of our problems.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Darrken In reply to Faerlyte [2008-03-10 17:05:55 +0000 UTC]

now that's a good one!

"shuddup, humanity has bigger problems, why don't you try and solve 'em."

but you seem to be shrugging it off yourself, or more like you point at it and yell "look", and be content. Corrupt governments and para militaristic are closely related to the problem don't you agree?

so how did this gun talk devolve into even greater generalizations... (my generalizations are WAY smaller than the ones you just made...)

ANd what is wrong with my scenario? you seem to be imagining that the case would be more like of occupying a country, whether any danger arising from WITHIN democracy will be supported by a (relative) majority!

anyway... you give up, good for you, but next time try and do it... more accordingly to reality. the only pointless thing when arguing is saying it is so when you run out of arguments. In general, If an argument is wrong, it should be easy to disprove it with a counter-example, or expose the the flaws in the reasoning behind it. Logic has its uses.

Faerlyte In reply to Darrken [2008-03-10 22:42:47 +0000 UTC]

Power corrupts is a cliched belief that isn't true because not everyone handles power the same way. It corrupts weak people. The world isn't black and white, nor made of absolutes. "Power corrupts" is not a reasonable argument.

Guns = Fanaticism favorite friend. You're saying that anyone who supports the ownership of guns is a fanatic - thanks for throwing us all under the same bus. That's untrue and sloppy, also known as bigotry. You don't know everyone who owns a gun and you don't know what kind of people they are.

I'd like to point out that some anti-gunners could fall under the category of fanatics as well.

Human beings have been murdering each other for centuries before the invention of gunpowder. Guns weren't the beginning of it, nor will they be the end. We can't make people better - the world is a dangerous place and it's always going to be. We take weapons out of the hands of law abiding citizens and the only people who will have power are the criminals because a gun isn't hard to make and they don't give a damn about the law. Them and "law enforcement" that is, but the police are always telling us that they can't protect us. We can't sue them either when someone gets murdered and they weren't there to prevent it.

If I were shrugging off over population I wouldn't be bringing it up. There's not a lot I can do as one person, but I can bring it to other people's attention and hope that it sticks. There are a lot of things a person can do to protect environment however, so don't you dare insinuate that you have any idea of who I am or what I do to make the world a better place. You're the one using it to belittle someone else rather than taking it as a valid point. Resorting to name calling and sarcastic remarks doesn't make an argument better or right.

You state things as if they are fact without backing them up with evidence (generalizations and absolutes don't count). You don't even have something original to add - you're repeating the sentiments of other people. It gets old and it gets tiring because it doesn't get me anywhere to talk to someone like you. You're not even listening to me, you're listening to yourself. I have a life outside of this place, so no, not having an argument against you isn't the only reason I would call this pointless - this conversation (if it can even be called that) is a waste of time. The point of debating is to try and convince the other party of your side's opinion, but in order to do that one must be willing to see an argument from all sides of the spectrum. You don't even bother to look, so what's the point of trying to debate?

Also, I never told you to shut up - don't put words into my mouth. And half of your sentences aren't capitalized.

I'm not going to continue this.

Darrken In reply to Faerlyte [2008-03-11 17:03:14 +0000 UTC]

yay, nice talking, but i get the feeling that part (most) of your criticism applies to yourself, and most important, read carefully, because you may notice too that you have misread my post.

power corrupts is a clichΓ©, was it Byron who made it so popular? who cares... that does not make it false, if you were presented with godlike powers, how would you use them? *

anyway, you tell me not to put words you never said on your mouth and you just did so, you cannot quote me on saying any gun supporter is a fanatic, or either way, only fanatics are gun supporters, once again you seem to have missed your logic classes in school. Actually I agree that some anti-gunners are real fanatics, that was never the question. I try not to judge before knowing, especially not people, whose intrinsic characteristic is individuality.

And when you forbid guns, they become a lot harder to get your hands on them (even for criminals), a lot easier to identify whomever used them and most European countries have very hard regulations on firearms and surprisingly, they are not overrun by criminals, quite the other way around, victims are less frequent. Having guns around will statistically increase your chance of getting shot.

and for last, you state things as if they are fact without backing them up with evidence (generalizations and absolutes don't count). You don't even bother to look, so what's the point of trying to debate? does this sound familiar? well, from my point of view it perfectly applies to you. funny, don't you think?

* the correct answer in order not be corrupted by the power granted, is not to use it, any other way, any use, will be biased by your moral code which unfortunately is nowhere close to foolproof because the world is not black and white but gray, and you do not possess the knowledge to know all the consequences of your acts with such power. I do not state that by using it you will not achieve a better world, but say that in doing so you will commit many mistakes, injustices, biased judgments, etc.

PD: dam, did i forget myself and capitalized some of my sentences?

PPD: great signature... very revealing. How could I be so naive and slow not to realize sooner that under the more or less correct speech... anyway, you at least got me convinced that NOTHING will make you change your views... well, maybe if god came down from the heavens... xD

A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largess of the public treasury. From that time on the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury, with the results that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship. Or someone uses the greed of the people to seize control and then abuses the position of being supreme commander of the nation's military forces to bully the populace into submission and cement the power of the one over the many.
