"Raphael"
(Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles)

Raphael is cool but crude.

Accidentally dropped into a sewer and mutated by a mysterious green goop, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were raised and trained by their sensei Splinter to defeat the evil Shredder and his villanous ninja clan, The Foot!

This Raphael is based on the 80s cartoon incarnation, where he was more of a sarcastic wannabe comedian and not the brooding, grumpy, prone to temper tantrums Raphael of the 2003 cartoon and original comic book series, So I tried to make that show through in his facial expression. If this was the 2003 Raphael, he'd have a mean, miserable look on his face

So basically here I wanted to make them still recoginizable as the Ninja Turtles you know and love, but with a more moden animation look to it (as the whole point of this AP project is about, lol). I wanted them to all look happy and friendly, as these are supposed to be based on the 80s cartoon versions. Its hard to describe correctly, but I really wanted thick forearms and lower legs with bigger feet and big hands as it (to me) made them seem less like green men wearing a shell and having a funny head, and more like a mutant, humanoid turtle, but without going too far so as they didn't still look like the TMNT if that makes any sense at all. I know the TMNT don't exactly look that much like a real turtle does, but yknow what I mean, lol. That influence and idea comes a bit from the recent NECA action figures based on the original comics, but also the 2007 CG movie which sorta had the same look. I wanted them sort of short, stocky looking body, but I still needed them to be thin enough in the body to emphasize the fact that they are in fact teenagers and that was a must for me. Oddly enough, how I draw the turtles' heads normally is very similar to how they are drawn in the recent Back to the Sewers TMNT cartoon. I wanted then to have bigger, bright eyes to make them expressive, as well as to again show off that they are young and not adults. If I made adult/future versions of the turtles they would have smaller eyes and more of a thicker physique more fitting of an adult version, so I did keep that in mind while designing my take on the Turtles. I also debated on whether or not give them all different skin colours like the toys had or give them the same colour like the cartoon did. I opted for giving them the same colour green as it was more of a reference to the cartoon and because the 2003 Turtles had the different skin tones as a standard so I figured I'd save that for whenever I did Turtles based on that incarnation. I made an effort to make sure on the face that the mouth firmly shows off a "beak" sorta look, to again emphasize that they are mutant turtles, and because real Turtles do have them. To bite you with.

The idea to post them in the order they are shown in the theme song, along with the quote attached to them from said theme song, was shamelessly and heartlessly stolen from who has been doing the same thing with his awesome reimaginings of the Turtles and their other assorted characters.

(NOTE: this is a work of fiction, this is not for a REAL animated series! I don't work in the animation industry in any way.)

Raphael "Raph" Turtle, the 2nd oldest of the TMNT! A sarcastic joker in the 80's animated series & pretty much a short tempered & strong headed loner/rebel in the other series' & comics! Another great job, Happy New Year!!!

Pretty cool. He looks a little more like a 'pre-teen' ninja turtle though.

Glad ya like it! There's a sad, sad part of me considering doing some of the "variants" these guys had in the old toy line, at least the first original set of them when it was a new, cool novelty before it turned into nothing but Turtle variants

Kingoji In reply to KrisSmithDW [2010-12-03 19:18:49 +0000 UTC]

I can't really remember that much about the variants. The only ones I remeber getting were the 'Real Feel' movie ones, or whatever the gimmik name was.

KrisSmithDW In reply to Kingoji [2010-12-04 02:37:53 +0000 UTC]

Oh those rubber skin ones, I remember em The variants I'm thinking of are the ones like "Space Cadet Raph" and "Undercover Don", but just the ones from the beginning of the series before it got really stupid, lol

Kingoji In reply to KrisSmithDW [2010-12-04 08:46:39 +0000 UTC]

Now you mention it, I had Undercover Don. I think he must have been the only one, though, and I think I got him just because the Turtles actually wore trenchcoats.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

KrisSmithDW In reply to Kingoji [2010-12-19 12:42:12 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, that pissed me off, there was just Undercover Don and none of the others in trenchcoats. I think they eventually released them all in trenchcoats but it was waaaay later, like end of the line mid-90s when the line was pretty much cancelled.

Naw, unfortunately not. This is just my personal take on the characters. From what I understand the new Nickelodeon TMNT show is going to be a computer animated/CG series so I have no idea wha they are going to look like. Hopefully we'll find out more once 2011 starts!

KrisSmithDW In reply to ballisticCow [2010-05-12 06:00:21 +0000 UTC]

lol glad ya like it! you know how obsessed I can get with facial expressions Hell, whenever I do commissions of OCs I demand all the info they can give on who the character is and their personality so I can see if I can get that personality to show through in their expression.

I think thats a little too obsessed, but whatever XD

Well I like it, and it always gives the art that little bit more depth and excitment. As a fellow character obsessor I love what you do!

It also seems to give stuff a bit more life and even a sense of movement when they are doing nothing but just standing there too (which seems to be a lot of my stuff as of late, lol)

But I'm glad you like it, it makes it worth the effort

MurderousAutomaton In reply to KrisSmithDW [2010-05-13 20:18:30 +0000 UTC]

Totally! I don't think I've heard of that show before--do you know what they've got planned so far? Is it based more on the old show? They should hire us to work on it!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

KrisSmithDW In reply to MurderousAutomaton [2010-05-19 10:57:15 +0000 UTC]

So far all I know is that its a CG show, a complete reboot, they are going to put a HUGE marketing campaign for it, and they are planning a movie as well, but its unknown if its part of the show or something separate. Oh, and Playmates will continue to make the toys for it. And its planned for 2012 apparently. For now, they are going to air the 2003 series until then.

MurderousAutomaton In reply to KrisSmithDW [2010-06-12 20:22:26 +0000 UTC]

Sounds interesting! I'm excited for that one. I heard some disturbing news about the movie, though--Michael Bay is supposed to direct it. Dang. I sure hope he treats it with more respect than he did Transformers.

KrisSmithDW In reply to MurderousAutomaton [2010-06-16 13:49:11 +0000 UTC]

I'm not sure if I heard he was directing it himself, only that his production company (Platinum Dunes) was going to make it (which means he's a producer). we can only hope!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MurderousAutomaton In reply to KrisSmithDW [2010-06-16 18:32:06 +0000 UTC]

Well, that would be a bit of a relief, but I'm still not sure it would be in capable hands if it's still handled by his company. We'll have to wait and see! Though I guess it's not like TMNT have never had a bad movie before--really, to me, the first one was awesome and the animated one was good, and the two inbetween are forgettable.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

KrisSmithDW In reply to MurderousAutomaton [2010-06-17 04:49:47 +0000 UTC]

I'm definitely crossing my fingers. Hopefully we'll luck out and we'll get an awesome movie!
But at the very least the animated series better be AWESOME or heads will roll!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MurderousAutomaton In reply to KrisSmithDW [2010-06-28 17:40:32 +0000 UTC]

Totally! They've had so many chances to make a cool TMNT cartoon show, but they always seem to fall short. I think if they concentrate on good writing and genuine style, it'll be cool. So many of the other attempts reeked of marketing--ripping off Teen Titan or anime, like every other show on TV is doing now! If it feels like real TMNT, then it'll be cool.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

KrisSmithDW In reply to MurderousAutomaton [2010-06-30 09:30:14 +0000 UTC]

Thats what I'm hoping for: something original and not a knock on something thats already popular. It needs to carve out its own "thing" just like it did back in the late 80s.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MurderousAutomaton In reply to KrisSmithDW [2010-06-30 18:22:01 +0000 UTC]

Definitely! I wouldn't mind if they took it in a different direction, as long as it seems organic to the franchise--none of this "let's travel to the future and look all cybernetic and slick and cool" business.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

KrisSmithDW In reply to MurderousAutomaton [2010-07-02 09:44:07 +0000 UTC]

I totally agree with ya there! I will die happy if they manage to put Rocksteady and Bebop in there. They need to make a comeback in some form!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MurderousAutomaton In reply to KrisSmithDW [2010-07-07 18:15:59 +0000 UTC]

Oh, yeah--they haven't gotten much love since the early 90s, huh? I think people got bored with them because they made them too damn stupid on the show. Like, on a borderline "developmentally disabled" level. They would definitely have a lot of potential if they were approached with a little more respect! I always wanted them to be in the second TMNT movie instead of Tokka and Razar, but that movie was terrible anyway so it probably wouldn't have helped.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

KrisSmithDW In reply to MurderousAutomaton [2010-07-10 09:48:29 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, everyone was DYING to have them show up in a movie. But Eastman and Laird were adamant that new characters from the cartoon weren't put in the movie because they wanted it to borrow more from the Mirage comics. Tokka and Rahzar were a compromise apparently.

Bebop and Rocksteady should still be thick in the head, but they need to be some sort of a threat at least, yknow?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MurderousAutomaton In reply to KrisSmithDW [2010-09-05 17:52:43 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, seems ironic that they'd push for a more "Mirage" level with the characters, but then include Vanilla Ice! I really wish they'd kept the quality of the second one on par with the first--it was so good!

By the way, sorry for the delay in responding--been on vacation for a while and I'm just now getting caught up!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

KrisSmithDW In reply to MurderousAutomaton [2010-09-08 16:15:46 +0000 UTC]

Oh yeah, even as a kid the Vanilla Ice scene was such a huge WTF moment

Not a problem, I know what ya mean by getting caught up, I'm SOOOO behind on replies m'self!

MurderousAutomaton In reply to KrisSmithDW [2010-09-11 18:30:59 +0000 UTC]

Ha, ha! Definitely. You can tell how much more kid-geared that second movie was, overall. Michelangelo using sausages as nunchucks? Hmm...

Anyway, yeah, slowly catching up with dA now... even had the chance to post some new stuff after forever!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

KrisSmithDW In reply to MurderousAutomaton [2010-09-18 05:44:52 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, they definitely kiddyfied it up, and then it just got worse in the 3rd movie, lol
