A Series of Unfortunate EventsThe Enevitable Ending
Part 5
Kit Snicket had not seen Violet since she married Count Olaf. In fact, she didn't even know that she got married until recently. But she had a crisis and needed to find her brother. Violet was the only one she could trust that was close. She knew there was no way she would harm Beatrice, her little daughter.
Violet was very surprised when Kit asked for her to watch Beatrice, since someone as sinister as Count Olaf was so close by. But she was happy to help Kit, even if it was something small like watching her daughter. Beatrice reminded her so much of Sunny, who she dreamt of everynight. All of her nightmares were filled with Klaus and Sunny's last words, and the Quagmire's too. She was glad to explain this to someone who would understand all her problems. Kit listened to her, and shared her thoughts abought Violet's nightmares. Then she handed over Beatrice and left. Violet went to her room, and then headed back downstairs, deciding to get some food to Beatrice, but sadly ending up in the same room, alone, with Olaf. Luckily, it wasn't for that long. Once she finally got food for Beatrice, she ran into Fiona on the stairs, and they both went into Violet's room, were Beatrice was. Right now, Fiona stared at the little two year old in shock.
"How did you-- When-- Were you-- Violet, how did you end up with Beatrice Snicket?" Fiona was at a lost for words, but she was able to ask that one question. So Violet explained everything to Fiona, and while she talked, she got some food ready for Beatrice, who was staring at Fiona with wide eyes.
"So you see my problem here?" Violet asked after she was done.
"Yeah, but how are you going to keep her a secret from Count Olaf?"
"I haven't thought that far ahead. That's why I need your help here. So what do you say?"
"I'll help as much as I can. But I don't know what I'll be able to do."
"For now, don't tell anyone she's here." Suddenly, Beatrice made a little noise and curled up on the bed.
"Is something wrong Beatrice?"
"Insade." Violet, who was used to Sunny's baby talk, knew she meant "I don't want to hide anymore." After translating to Fiona, Violet tried to figure out what she meant by 'hide anymore.' It suddenly occured to her that Beatrice was probably hidden for her entire life.
"It won't be for that much longer, Beatrice, I promise." she said. She smiled at the little toddler, who was looking around the room. Violet had some inventions laid out, some tools for making the inventions, and a notebook filled with invention drawings. After a little bit of thought, she figured that her room wasn't the wisest place to hide a toddler.
"Hey Fiona, that spare room at the end of the room is still empty, right?" Violet asked, instinctively tying her hair up in a ribbon. Fiona started to smile. She knew Violet well enough that she knew she was thinking up something for Beatrice.
"You meen the one at the end of the hall that no ones been in since this wing was built? Yeah, it's still empty, unless you put something in there."
"Good. We're going to need it. Beatrice, you're going to get your own room. You'll have to stay there for a while, so do you have any intrests we should know about?" Beatrice smiled up at the two people who were trying to do something nice for her, thinking hard. It felt like so long since someone other than her own mother was nice to her.
"Ishilak, abok, mowit pic," which meant, "I like sea shells, and books, mostly with pictures." Violet translated, squinting her nose when she heard her say sea shells. She still remembered when sea life was considered 'in'.
"Alright, the books will be easy, but the shells might be a little harder. Anything else?"
"Um, slikan," which meant, "Um, I like snakes." Violet translated again, her eyes zoning out as she thought of Uncle Monty, and the Incredibly Deadly Viper, and Peru.
"Why would she like Peru?" Fiona asked, bringing her back to reality.
"Did I say that? Sorry, I was thinking of other things."
"Swim!" Beatrice said, and there was no need for translation.
"Do you think we could take her swimming sometimes?" Fiona asked Violet. But Violet had already zoned out again, thinking of Lake Lachromose and Aunt Josephine.
"Were did you want to go?" Fiona asked. "I thought you said Lake something."
"Sorry, I zoned out again. Isn't there a pool somewere in this place?"
"Yeah. There's two, actually, one inside, one outside."
"Okay, but it will be a little risky."
"There's a beach nearby you know," Fiona said. "It's called Briny Beach." Violet bit her lip hard to stop herself from screaming. She NEVER wanted to go back to that place. Never.
She shook her head and started to concentrate on making a bed for Beatrice. What would she need? Some steel for the bed frame, and she needed something to make a mattress. She could use some big pillows, and a small sized blanket.
Suddenly, the three girls heard heavy footsteps coming closer to them. Violet threw the blanket's over Beatrice and sat down at her desk, were she worked on her inventions. Fiona stood behind her and the two of them pretended to be having a conversation when the door burst open. Violet turned to tell whoever it was to get out of her room, but the words got choked in her mouth, along with a ton of smoke.
"Olaf told me to get you downstairs. He said to tell you to dress nice, because there's a salesman here that wants to sell us a beach house." It was Esme, smoking a cigarrete and wearing a rediculous outfit that reminded Violet of a squid. Behind her was Carmelita, who wore a fluffy red dress, glaring at the two other girls.
"We'll be there in a minute," Violet said. "Now go away."
"Why should we, cakesniffers." Violet sighed, then remembered something Duncan had said years ago.
"The only cakesniffer here is you, Carmelita. Now go away." Carmelita glared at her indignantly, but she and Esme left.
"That was a close one," Fiona stated as she picked up Beatrice, who had waited under the blanket.
"Ew," she said, wrinkling her nose at the fumes the cigerates left. Violet laughed, then decided to keep Beatrice with Fiona as she went downstairs.
