Description
Standing at 15 ft tall with a 35'ft wingspan, the Kos'Chey are top dogs of the island. These beasts are a ravenous bunch, easily Swallowing prey the size of small men in their 10'ft Skulls. They're greatly feared, yet they are respected by the strange creatures that have so graciously saved my tail from the Aleutian Cold... When I told them that dangerous creatures like these (Bears and Tigers) are exterminated by our people; They seemed appalled at the notion, telling me that without these... these... MONSTERS!!! The world would wither and die, how strange... (A translated excerpt from the journal of Russian fur trader Stephan Glotov and is estimated to be written in the year 1765)"Anyways, The Kos'Chey, a descendant of Azhdarchid Pterosaurs, (Think Quetzalcoatlus) and will be the first of the diverse menagerie of "The Isle of Avians" I will showcase. Unlike other "lost worlds" the island is actually located off the south-western coast of Alaska. This is a place where Dinosaurs and other contemporaries have survived to the present day... Yet, survival during the Cenozoic has made them become unlike anything you could ever imagine..."

If flying pterosaurs survived K-T, why didn't they reconquer the rest of the world? Surely island hopping to the mainland would be possible for a living Cessna.

I actually touched on this issue in the supporting art... I actually have no ideas yet on why they don't exist in other locales though... So I'm just using some handwavium for now...

You could say that they once were more spread, but that they died off on the main continents after 👍: 0 ⏩: 1

I actually based the Azhdarchid's color palette on Steller's Sea Eagles... [link]

Yep, I knew that. Unlike how pop culture protrays them, Pterosaurs can't grasp with their feet like Raptors and were plantigrade like us. Azhdarchid limbs were actually similar in proportion with... UNGULATES. Thats right these guys would have CHASED DOWN their prey on foot 030... Anyways, I disagree that Dinosaurs were the top dogs in the end after reading a journal of the late JohnFaa a few years ago... [link]

hmm, that would make sense
for i know that quitzalcoatlus had to wait for a certain time of the day in order to fly, because of it's hugeness. something that had do to with the sun
also the fact of how their legs where, there's no way a pterosaur could pick up a dinosaur with it's feet
but it's beak ? ... defenitely
but what i want to know is did they hunt bipedal or on fours (makes you think of a wyverns)
and ... they wheren't?
i haven't seen the link yet but if you mean pterosaur wise then i'm shocked
pterosaurs where the kings of the skys, but then the birds evolved, i would think birds might have replaced them food wise or territorial wise you know, with all the volcanoes going around and habitat change, the big pterosaurs might have had a problem

Actually, With recent bio-mechanical studies; Pterosaurs of any size would be able launch under their own free will. Also, When it comes to Pterosaurs, they probably had locomotion similar to bears (quadrupeds with occasional bipedalism), and were as diverse lifestyle-wise as mammals are today. Anyways, not just Pterosaurs were taking over, Crocodilians were major predators in the warmer areas of S. America and Africa...
Also, The Bird/Pterosaur conflict is a VERY common misconception. Think of how Birds and bats are today... Bats are actually more efficient and flexible than birds at flying, but are limited by the widespread success of Avians, and would take advantage of open niches if Birds did die off. HOWEVER, they live completely different lifestyles and don't compete at all.

i was thinking about it in a way like how spinosaurus went extinct
it was a huge predator meaning it needed a lot to eat
if it's environment changed to fast, it wouldn't be able to adapt and would die
so when you think about it with pterosaurs like quetzalcoatlus, if it's environment changed to fast, then it might as well die out also
when i said that the birds drove them out, i was thinking about the Walking With Dinosaurs show
and wasn't thinking common sense lolz

You'll love the Isle even more considering ALL the Megafauna are Avian. There's Oviraptors that act like Bears, toothed waterbirds that ambush like Crocs, there's even Giant "Moas" used like camels by the natives to navigate the great southern tundra...
