Description From the notes of Dr. Wilhelmina Lerna:

"T.giganticus was first discovered in 2034, the start of the Second Age of Monsters. It had been sixty or so years since the last confirmed kaiju sighting (although a few incidents were reported in the intervening years, none ever produced proof of an actually kaiju encounter), and as such it came as a surprise to most of the world.

"The first specimen of T.giganticus arrived at the shores of the city of Genericton, California. The monster was extremely malnourished, being drawn to the city by the smell of prey. The coast guard tried to fend off the creature, but its weaponry was nowhere near strong enough to provide a suitable challenge. The monster was eventually downed by an experimental bio weapon, though not killed.

"The appearance of this monster brought alarm on a global scale. Unlike most of the unverified sightings of the past, which mainly dealt with class M0 or M1 kaiju, this was an M4 - the kind of kaiju that had devastated Japan on a near-daily basis back in the 1950's. Even more troubling was the fact that it was not an amphibious creature by nature, which meant it had travelled from some other landmass. This meant there may have been others from that same landmass (there were) that may follow in its footsteps, so to speak, and come to America (they did).

"An expedition was immediately formed, and sure enough it not only found the landmass, which was dubbed "Typhon Island," but a half dozen or so kaiju on it as well. Amongst them were three other specimens of T.giganticus: an adult mating pair, and one juvenile. An unfortunate series of events led ALL of the island's giant inhabitants to attack Genericton, with the horde of monsters only leaving once the mating couple retrieved their offspring.

"In a way this was actually very fortunate, as the father Tyrannopyrodon, who the public dubbed "Tyrantis," would end up saving mankind from numerous threats - from kaiju, mankind itself, and even outer space - in next couple of decades."

Character Alignment: Chaotic Neutral/Chaotic Good
Team Afiliations: Tyrant Squad (Tyrantis is leader), Typhon Island Natives, Dinosaur Kaiju, Giga Boy's Best Friends (Tyrantis only)
Episode Appearances: The Terror of Tyrantis, Tyrantis's Revenge, Battle of the Behemoths, Assault on Area 51, Tyrantis vs. the Martian Monsters, They Came from Beneath the Ice!, Tyrantis vs. Hitler, Invasion from Beyond Space
Personality & Temperment: T.giganticus is an intelligent and social species with a strong familial instinct. Parents will defend their young with all weapons at their disposal. All known specimens of T.giganticus show a great fondness for combat, often sparring with each other or other kaiju in a friendly manner. The species is renowned for its creativity in combat; on some occasions they can even craft crude weapons to deal with opponents. There is a tender side to the creature as well - unlike most predators, T.giganticus will not prey on the sick or weak, only fighting those who can face it on equal terms, and it shows absolute loyalty to any creature that has earned a place in its "pack." The species is not particularly aggressive to humankind, and will keep to its territory on Typhon Island so long as it is is not provoked. It is also one of the few kaiju that regularly communicates with others, using a mix of vocal sounds and body language.

Ahhh, good ol' Tyrantis.... "PROPERTY OF " By far in the long list of inspirations that affected the little sandiel that was me, Tyrantisterror had to be the greatest. The concept of a Reptillan creature narrative that didn't involve destruction, one that involved the creatures thoughts and feelings, really stuck with me and led to my love of reptillian creatures. Over the years of stalking on DA before creating an account, I almost always looked at the thought inspiring posts he would create. In the past year, he has left deviantart due to unfortunate circumstances and has since moved on to Tumblr. "Maybe I REALLY should create my own Tumblr page xDD"

Now for Tyrantis' design, I took the most "up to date redesign" KAS Tyrantis, lengthened the snout "slightly",gave the traditional color scheme, more pronounced cheekbones,  and had his lips cover his teeth to enforce the "Retrosaur" look. Bare teeth on dinosaur reconstructions was a trend that appeared in the 70's and 80's and earlier reconstructions usually did have lizard-lips. While Tyrantisterror did start giving Tyrantis a little lip, I decided to go full out... xDD

The interesting thing to me is that there's almost a G14-ish vibe to this take. Maybe just superficially because of the lips and thick neck. Still, since Ty is a nod to Goji and other characters in that genre, it does make me wonder what it would look like to draw a progession of Tyrantises as if they were from the different eras Godzilla hailed from. Showa Tyrantis, Heisei Tyrantis, Millenium, Legendary, etc. Maybe it'd be a fun project for him or you, if he liked the idea. Or maybe I'm aimlessly rambling on your deviation's page (in which case sorry).

I like what you did with the scutes/scales/quills? on his jaw. It feels like a more modern texture than what you'd see on a retrosaur, but not in a way that sticks out or feels misplaced. I'm also curious: is that really thick, dark part under his eye a bony growth or is it fleshy and droopy?

Actually I think TT did a little sketch dump of Tyrantis generations in a sketchdump a while back... tyrantisterror.deviantart.com/… He said that Tyrantis as he draws it IS Showa-style. I might take that offer of doing a full body Legendary Tyrantis though

OH and the dark part's basically a zygomatic arch... covered by cornified skin. For younger individuals like Tyrantor it's pretty fleshy, but for older individuals like Tyranta and Tyrantis the skin starts to harden and darken. Also, yes I did say ZYGOMATIC ARCH... I don't know whether it's not really my place to make suggestions, or whether TT would think it's pretty cool, but I have a head-cannon that Retrosaurs are even further removed from Archosaurs, instead they are... CONVERGENT SYNAPSIDS.

Thank you!  I always like it when other artists reinterpret Tyrantis in their style.

What aesthetics do you like most?... I might make a full body drawing sometime in the next few months.

The crocodile-like scutes on his neck are an interesting touch.  I also like that you incorporated the massive lower jaw spikes from his KAS incarnation and mixed them with the small/almost unoticeable prickly scales on the detailed texture image I made of him recently.
