Special little comic I did for my Snails ask blog Ask-Glittershell: [link]A lot of love and twice as many layers went into my first real comic. I'm quite proud of it. The comic itself is narrated by Snails, and sorta preludes the blog and gives a bit of insight into what the blogs story is about.
I'll let the comic itself do the rest of the talking.

[Note]: Some people were mentioning this, it's not about dyslexia. He just really struggles with academics. The book is a visual gag etc.

Not so much Dyslexia as more of being called up to the board and having no idea what it is. I'm keeping true to the show in some aspects, like him not being very academically gifted.

At first I thought this was going to be about learning disorders. I was happy enough with that.
Then you pulled out the transgender card and made me fall in love with it.

I always felt that he acts happy go lucky but is depressed in real life. He is embarrassed about how stupid he seems to others but decides to play it off because people like him as a idiot, but he is afraid his friends would leave him if he showed how much it hurt him to look dumb.

I've always liked Snails. Snips can take a leap off a bridge for all I care, but Snails just has that of laid back attitude. He's dumb as a post, but that's okay. He's just being Snails and that's good enough for me.

Not to make light of this or anything, as I know many people in RL suffer over this, but Snail's you live in a magical world. When you grow up he'll be able to just go to a unicorn and presto chango, he'll be a mare. Just saying. Heck if his family are understanding, and at least one is probably a unicorn they could do it for him, or he could learn to do it himself one day.

Sec Change magic is possible only by the best of Unicorns/ Not even Twilight, who is actually suppose to be a prodigy at magic, can actually do it. So really, Unicorn Magic is out the window... which leaves Human Science as the only option.

This is very good. As someone who struggles IRL with gender identity I think you captured the emotional complexity of this kind of situation perfectly. By any chance, have you ever read Dash's Secret by Hopefox on fimfiction.net? If not I highly recommend that you do.

I have not, actually. I don't read a lot of fanfiction (there are quite a few Scootabelle fics that I STILL need to read).

So . . . I'm getting that Snails is dyslexic and identifies as female, and the feeling that I'm missing something that would connect those two things together.
And apparently I was correct when I interpreted the socks metaphor, but not when I thought it was obvious.

Well not really dyslexic, more just generally bad at academic stuff (he's about a six watt).
The board and book pictures were more to set the stage that this snails still overtly follows canon, but there's more that we (and the other ponies) don't see.
It's providing a surface to contrast depth.

It's a metaphor. They are symbolic socks for how he feels about himself. The sock on the inside is purple, because that's how he feels. But, when he goes out in public, he wears an orange sock above it to show what society sees.
Decoding it: Snails is a guy on the outside, but a girl on the inside. He acts like a guy to please the ones around him, and acts a girl when alone to please him self. If you will, he's two pairs of socks.

Looking at the other comments, that's obviously the right answer..., but how does one interpret that? Socks as a metaphor for gender crisis? I would never guess something like that. Did you reread it, or somehow garnered that the first time?

I don't think I've ever seen such a deep contemplation on a character that's been tossed aside and labeled as nothing more than an invalid. It's an incredibly detailed depiction of a character that really deserves more love in the fandom.
Snails... I'm sorry for EVERY insult I've ever thrown at you. I hope that, one day, you can find the humanity to forgive me... if you can.
