Description
This is an alien species that I invented that dwells on the planet Temori, 40 lightyears from Earth. They originated from the continent of Kakzul, near the equator of the planet. This species is called the modern serlisk (Serliska gregarium). All other members of the genus Serliska are extinct, partly due to competition from the modern serlisk. Serlisks have two tentacles that they can coil up under their heads. These tentacles terminate in a a pair of opposable claws that are useful in slicing up food morsels and handling other objects. They can use their dextrous tentacles and claws to create tools. They are very short-sighted, so they rely on their strong sense of hearing to tell where things are. They produce sounds from vibrating, speaker-like plates located in a pocket on their head. They detect odors via two rows of vents below their eyes. Their sense of smell works best underwater (they are semi-aquatic).
They have a caste society based on genetics. The green serlisk shown on the left is a "worker" serlisk, and the brown one on the right is a "leader" serlisk. In their society, the leaders are scientists and political figures that make most of the important decisions. The workers, which are physically stronger but mentally less versatile than the leaders, are responsible for carrying out various physical tasks. Unlike humans, worker serlisks are instinctively predisposed to do the will of the leaders without question. They actually desire to do the work that the leaders put before them. If a worker is forced to go long periods of time without doing anything productive, they actually become depressed.
Both adult leaders and adult workers are 6 feet long on average, with the workers being slightly heavier due to their more muscular bodies. Serlisks produce purple, gelatinous eggs which must develop underwater.
Despite their primitive appearance, these creatures are highly intelligent and technologically-advanced. Although their intelligence is only comparable to that of humans, they are far more advanced than us due to their ability to work together more easily than us. Their various technological achievements are superluminal spacecraft, monopole reactors, quantum computing, advanced genetic engineering and microtechnology.

About how large are they? I like the idea, but I imagine them very tiny; like garter snakes.

They're around 6 feet long, if I remember correctly.

This picture is nice in that it isn't biased to what we'd expect intelligent life to look like.

I tried to think of some way to have an intelligent species that was nonhumanoid. The serpentine body plan is extremely common in nature (snakes, caecillians, earthworms, legless lizards, eels, etc), so I figured that it wouldn't be a far shot for an alien to be worm-like. Manipulatory appendages are also necessary for intelligent life to become technological, and since tentacles can be highly dextrous, I chose them.
