Description  Something I cooked up just a few days ago, basically a Communistic Japan that serves as a USSR analogue with a race-based communist ideology a lot more similar to North Korea’s Juche, minus the isolationism and more of Stalinism’s Socialism in One Country (with the Japanese race as the “leading” one and the whites in general as the “undesirable”). The whole backstory might be contrived but the idea is somewhat based on my musings of making Japan the most “sympathetic” power in WWII due to the non-Soviet Allied powers being kind of morally grey (or at least on the lighter shades) and the Axis well black and both white led. Not that OTL’s Imperial Japan was anything likeable, matter of fact they were basically on par with Nazi Germany in terms of evilness but still influenced part of this ATL Japan nevertheless. That and the Red Sun Rising TL (not made by me btw), of which I designed the flag for that TL’s communist Japan.

The POD is Yuan Shikai’s forces winning the National Protection War against the anti-Monarchist forces in 1916, thus ensuring the survival of the Empire of China and it’s alienation by most of the European Empires, who were still engaged in World War I at that time. He then shortly declared war on the Entente (via a secret offer from Imperial Germany ala the Zimmerman Telegram) for the sake of maintaining power in China and to spite the European “Imperialists”, which would prompt the Empire of Japan to intervene at the behest of the Allies. The opening up of the Asian front in WWI, complete with trench warfare and airplanes, would create chaos for both the Chinese and the Japanese, with the anti-Imperial forces in China slowing down the efforts of Yuan’s regime and the anti-war opposition in Japan hampering the war effort in a manner similar to Tsarist Russia. This has the effect of turning off the USA from entering the war altogether since the president at the time, Woodrow Wilson, has no desire to fight alongside the “yellow” men in wartime and in Europe having the pressure of the Allies taken off from Germany who were able to go on to the defensive in the Western front; all of this extending the war by a year with tremendous consequences for the world.

Russia still had the Tsar overthrown and withdrew from the war but had the democratic Kerensky led government in place, but Japan would have its share of having its monarchy overthrown but in 1918 with different results; an analogue to OTL’s October Revolution led by the Collective Party, who then went up against a counter revolution by the anti-Collective forces that started a civil war that prompted the intervention of the European powers that then ended up stirring unrest in their Asian colonies, even as WWI came to an end in a stalemate in 1919. By the early 1920’s, the European powers left Japan to deal with the anti-colonial uprisings but the whole experience would further solidify the Collective regime and the creation of the Federation of Socialist Shuogou Republics (FSSR) along with the retaking of most of their former Imperial territories. In 1926, the first leader of the FSSR died from a stroke, and in his place Kita Ikki took over and industrialized the country, though many of the “race enemies” would die in the process via engineered famines and *gulags in the Pacific Islands territories (and purged too).

The rise of the FSSR and its activities in Asia would spark global interest with its intervention in the Chinese Civil War of the 1920’s (caused by a Beer Hall Putsch analogue in China by Chiang Kai-Shek and his band of ultranationalists that ironically succeeded) with the backing of the pro-Shuogou Chinese Republic and in the Thai Civil War, collapse of French Indochina, and Second American Civil War of the 1930’s (which is a lot similar to the one in the Falcon Cannot Hear TL) with the annexation of the Philippines, Hawaii, and most of the American pacific territories (via the “permission” of aligned socialist factions within them) which would end up creating tensions with the American Empire, which was the result of the fascistic, white supremacist faction winning the civil war in question and unsurprisingly hate the Shuogou Federation with passion. At the same time tensions around the world threaten to start World War II which would come in 1944 after a skirmish broke out between a revanchist fascist France and a democratic Imperial Germany that shed its authoritarian ways after WWI ended.

In the year 1945, the American Empire, allied with the French (who were also anti-Shuogou), went on a warpath around the Western Hemisphere, taking over Mexico, Canada, and many parts of Latin America and it would only be a matter of time before it would turn its wrath upon the FSSR for not only regaining its lost territories from the Second American Civil War but for “living space” for the white people.

You're welcome, heck the flag itself is a spiritual successor to that one for your TL.

Exactly how do you write Shuogou?

As "集合"; Shuogou is the Japanese term for "collective" and I kind of like it.

Oh..... that's definitely not how you would use 集合. It's closer to a mathematical term or the adjective collective.

It is? I guess Google translate didn't do me favors.

However, I did find a word that might be helpful to you: "習合". It means (if I make things fanciful) "eclectically harmonize different beliefs/ideologies." We can have it colloquially translated as "Collective."

Hope this helps.

On Google translate, the term translates to "learning" or "Syncretism" so I'm not sure if that works; my Japanese is pretty subpar even though I know a couple letterings.

Well, if you question someone who has Japanese as one of her native languages, I guess I can't help you that much :v

Wait you know Japanese very well? I guess I'll take your advice then.

It also works very well because Japan tends to do a lot of syncretic blending of ideas, be it religion, politics, etc.

I see then; come to think of it they tend to blend foreign ideas into their culture especially Western ones.

Very interesting scenario. Who would be the current leader of Japan/Shougou?

In ITTL's 1945, it'd be Kita Ikki, up until he dies of some disease in the 1950's; as of ITTL's 2017, I don't know. But I know for a fact that the Shuogou Federation will survive TTL's WWII.
