Fun. Looks a bit like the old tv scifi things to me, less lightsaber. Though for varied geekness, I'm hoping for a sonic screwdriver next time

Yes, lightsabers to me are supposed to be machined from aluminum What in god's name is a sonic screwdriver?

Eek! I've shown just what a geek I am!

It's a tool the doctor uses in doctor who. Basically an excuse for locked doors not to get in the way of adventure plots as well as any other use the writers can think of [link]

I remember that! Haven't seen Doctor Who in ages, but used to love it years ago. This flashlight kinda reminds me of that show.

Yeah, I'm gonna pester him to watch the show and make me a sonic screwdriver someday

I am so on the job! Actually, I could make one that actually opens doors (and also has that cool blue light) Let me know if you see a better picture of the older kind though, I'd like to make both.

I watched the hokey old episodes when I was a kid, then one of my regulars at work spent two years harassing me to watch the new show and I got totally hooked. Take a look sometime. (A lot of episodes are on watch it now on netflix.)

I will try to hunt down better pictures for you

*insert evil laugh*

You know, I don't remember ever seeing a whole episode. Did they have the old show on SciFi at one point?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

magpiesmiscellany In reply to KubusRubus [2010-02-27 04:46:46 +0000 UTC]

I don't know. I hadn't watched them since the 80s. It was on PBS then. The new who was on scifi at one point. I think bbc america took it away from them though

KubusRubus In reply to magpiesmiscellany [2010-02-27 04:59:45 +0000 UTC]

Well, I wasn't even in the US yet in the 80s I dunno anything about channels now, my tv knowledge ends 6 years ago, I'll see if I can find it online, is the netflix thing free? it isn't right?

magpiesmiscellany In reply to KubusRubus [2010-02-28 01:40:53 +0000 UTC]

Sorry, I've always been here

My knowledge of channels is 7 years out of date except for watching dr who a year or two ago on a channel that I'm not sure exists anymore

No, it isn't. It's one of my silly expenses Cheaper than going to see things in the theater.

So we basically stopped watching TV at about the same time

I thought so, my father actually does the DVD thing from netflicks, doesn't watch even one third and rips and burns the DVDs has a huge bookcase full of movies

magpiesmiscellany In reply to KubusRubus [2010-03-01 00:48:32 +0000 UTC]

I think I mostly stopped after college. I used to watch it while crafting there. But at home I've got access to movies. (And the history channel doesn't show much in the way of history anymore...)

Yeah, I do that too sometimes. It's kind of amazing. I think for everything I really really like there are a lot of 'eh' movies. But I'd rather watch it while crafting than go to the theater and sit still!

KubusRubus In reply to magpiesmiscellany [2010-03-01 23:15:13 +0000 UTC]

Yes, when I did watch tv it was mostly discovery/history channels but the quality of programming was declining rapidly

I haven't been to a movie theater since I stopped having relationships, and that was a while ago

magpiesmiscellany In reply to KubusRubus [2010-03-01 23:37:12 +0000 UTC]

Ah, I almost always go/went with friends. The few dates I had that involved movies were fairly awful.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

KubusRubus In reply to magpiesmiscellany [2010-03-02 00:48:59 +0000 UTC]

That's not even the thing for me, it was always mostly ok when I went to the movies with exes but I stopped liking the whole thing in general, I'm getting more and more antisocial as the years go by and it bothers me at times but also makes things easier.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

magpiesmiscellany In reply to KubusRubus [2010-03-02 02:26:40 +0000 UTC]

I get that. My biggest issue was the going as friends, oh, wait, you think we're what?! But now I huddle in my own corner and watch netflix.

So we are both turning into hermits basically Great.

Oh, you know what's weird? I can't seem to make a single "proper" bezel for any of the small oval cabs you've sent me... still trying though

magpiesmiscellany In reply to KubusRubus [2010-03-02 03:42:22 +0000 UTC]

Well, you could make settings till I sent you stones, so I figured it was contagious! But we can blame the stones too

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

KubusRubus In reply to magpiesmiscellany [2010-03-02 03:55:17 +0000 UTC]

Well actually I've never made that type of bezel... And yes! I blame the stones! (especially after one of the labradorites cracked on me after I tried to reduce the size by sanding down the bottom, speaking of labradorites, have I showed you these [link] ? I should get 14 of them on thursday and wouldn't mind sharing, dammit I can't remember if I asked you or not)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

magpiesmiscellany In reply to KubusRubus [2010-03-02 03:59:27 +0000 UTC]

Don't worry about it. I've got some labradorite beads. Though that reminds me, I'm going to a small mineral show this weekend. Shall I keep an eye out for ammonites?

I've seen plenty of fossils, not sure I've run across this. I'll try to keep an eye out. Sometimes these shows go brilliantly, other times it's a bit of a waste. Or else I spend my money on specimins instead of project pieces

Ok cool, basically if you find something awesome for around 30$ (small ammolite/fire agate and etc) I'm good for that amount via paypal.

Ha! Yes, about 3 people did in total Though I'd say it is pretty weak as a lightsaber, gotta use a green laser instead of a 50 year old light bulb next time

KubusRubus In reply to Makogoeth [2010-02-28 07:49:20 +0000 UTC]

A laser? No, I just know the powerful ones are expensive, the ones that can burn through paper and light a match from 20m away start at about 150-200$
