KupoGames — A Platformer Game in Flash

Description Well here's my dissertation on Flash games.

Keep in mind that this was written for a software engineering project, not a game design one. It assumes the reader knows nothing about video games, so a lot of it is going to sound very patronizing to most people.

A lot of the content probably isn't too useful, a bunch is probably wrong, a few stats are made up, but if you read the whole thing you might still find something interesting.

At the very least you'll learn about some of the tedious processes you have to deal with if you end up doing software engineering.

Step 1: grab something to drink.

Step 2: Open EBF 3 in another tab, and get to the main menu.

Step 3: allow lost & forgotten (main menu music) to play in the background.

Step 4: get comfortable and start reading.

Wow! I am overwhelmed how detailed this is!
I had written a short Game Design Document for a variation of the classic "Pong" in the previous semester, but that was nothing compared to this.
Thanks a lot for the upload!
Now I am motivated to study harder

I speak and write english, portuguese and spanish, going on a fourth language, please, it's no bother to me, if you ever need a game translated or anything, I'll do it for you ^-~

You evil bugger blanked out the revenue statistics. That was 50% of why I read the whole thing!

(I just want to know more about how large the sums of money are that are involved in making video games, including creation expense and possible returns)
(Judging by kickstarter, large games take in the 100,000s to make. That's a ton of money!)

You probably won't earn much from Flash unless your games are always making front pages and are part of a series.

You said in the performance section (pages 101-102) that, "Users who did change the [quality] settings however, most often chose selected the lowest setting, suggesting that particularly poor performance must be needed to prompt this." Which probably isn't true, because I (and probably many others) just changed it to the lowest setting because I personally could care less about how it looks and want the game to be working as fast as possible. Just saying so that you don't think everyone else believes 26 fps is slow.

Overall I liked your dissertation though. Very accurate for the most part. Good Job.

After seriously reading it thoroughly, I can see one difference between our dissertations: how one refer oneself. In yours, you can say "you", but in mine I had to refer myself in 3rd person view. Ok, so that's not important. What's important is my 2-word comment on your dissertation: VERY DETAILED. But that's the good thing. A dissertation has gotta explain everything to show that you know what you're looking for. And it gives a good "behind the scenes" feeling about Adventure Story too. New and budding game creators/developers can definitely learn from this treasure of information.

Madame-Meepers [2012-05-16 06:28:28 +0000 UTC]

Ah, dissertation. Quite a whole load of research. But there's only thing that sets our dissertations apart... And that is, I'm not allowed to use wikipedia. Mainly because wikipedia also cites from other places to compile all their information together. It's true! So I had to google my information up! I can't comment on this yet because I'm still reading it but I will when I'm done.

It was interesting to see the iterative (and interactive!) process of balancing the game and giving new options for the player. It was also nice to see that you took the criticism seriously and plan to make a sequel that can cover the faults.

I hope you can keep making good quality games
