Description
Yay, finally managed to finish something. And random title is random X3I'm sure everyone knows that Halloween is round the corner (sweets, ghosts and costumes FTW) but for Hindus, Sikhs and Jains all over the world (Malaysia included), there is another very important celebration coming up: Deepavali.
Deepavali, or Diwali, is better known in the Western world as the 'festival of lights' and the significance and historical details of the celebration differs between regions and religions, but basically it's to celebrate the triumph of good over evil. The word Deepavali comes from the Sanskrit 'Dipa' (lamp) and 'Gavali' (row), together it means 'row of lamps'.
In Malaysia, one way you can tell Deepavali is coming is shopping complexes start to display 'kolam' or a form of painting utilizing geometrical lines and curves on the ground, using colourful rice powder. The colours are really vivid and the motifs are beautiful to look at ^w^
Here, Tiger and Marvin, two characters from the webcomic Housepets by Rick Griffin, have finished one of their own in their living room, adorning traditional Indian costumes. Apparently, Tiger got hungry and started snacking on the rice powder itself! If Marvin could facepaw there and then, he would X3
I'm really not sure how I got this idea, or why did I start drawing this in the first place, but once you start, you cannot stop, so might as well go all the way~
I would also like to wish Happy Deepavali to everyone who celebrates it. Have fun drawing your own kolams there too ^w^
Tiger, Marvin and Housepets belong to Rick Griffin. Please do visit his page and support him by buying the second book of the Housepets! comic, it'll be a treat for you and for him ^w^ More information is in his page. Also, visit www.housepetscomic.com, go!
P/s: I would like to apologize if there's any discrepancies or mistakes that might exist in the picture and in the descriptions above, and please contact me if there's anything you need me to change.
P/s 2: Deepavali Naalvaazhtukkal is Tamil for Happy Deepavali. Yay for more foreign language learned!
P/s 3: The icons are an afterthought, but I rather like them XD
P/s 4: I really need to stop writing lengthy descriptions =w=''
(Edited a bit on the red plate after being pointed out by a friend in the forums)

I really like the way you rendered the texture of the rice powder and the intricate patterns on the clothing. Also, you have a really good eye for color. I must say though that I haven't heard of Deepavali before I found your artwork. The icons of Marvin and Tiger are indeed cute but what interests me more are the headbands they're wearing.
I imagine that there's some significance behind it but I'm not sure what it is.

Thanks!
The texture are defaults available in the program, nothing special =w=
And well, glad that I could introduce Deepavali to some people here XD
Erm, those are not headband. Actually, the white is the whiteout effect (I think, I'm not sure) in which white borders surround the drawing. The ears and headfur are actually detached from the face (why I do that, I have no idea myself)

OK, so they're not wearing headbands. I'm sorry for making that mistake. Thank you for the clarification.
