I don't get it @.@ *is a PS noob*
I don't get what a clipping mask is, let alone linear dodge....

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

felisdeityus In reply to BL4D3-4EVA [2007-12-09 11:48:38 +0000 UTC]

It's a mask that effectively 'locks' the transparent pixels when created on an empty layer above some artwork.

In practice, draw a circle on one layer (not the default background layer as the object you're masking must have transparent pixels for the technique to work) and colour it in.

Then make a new layer above, right click and select 'clipping mask'. Now when you draw on that second layer, you can only draw 'inside' the circle. Yuo can create as many masks for that first layer as you please.

Linear dodge, basically is a type of blending mode that will lighten - see here

Dude, hotkey for clipping mask - hold down alt and click between the layers

Replying to my own comment. -_-;

Ummm, a lot of people tell me that the brush you used comes with Photoshop, buuut mine didn't. >.<
Do you possibly know where you can download it...? .__.;

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Arikachan In reply to Lunaros [2007-12-09 20:21:01 +0000 UTC]

do you have a tablet? if not, then you can't use the brush as it's pressure sensitive. but Kuurin has added a mouse user option too, which you can use instead if you read closely =3

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Lunaros In reply to Arikachan [2007-12-09 21:34:01 +0000 UTC]

Yes, I do have a tablet, but I rarely use it for colouring, since my hands are so shaky.

Ah, I see. o: Thank you. Sorry, I should've read closer. D:
~

It's weird, though. D: I SHOULD have that brush, but it's just not there... ._.;

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Arikachan In reply to Lunaros [2007-12-09 22:13:13 +0000 UTC]

is it pressure sensitive? if it is, then you should see it, but if it don't then it could be the driver, and then I suggest you to remove your current driver for the tablet and download a driver that fix pressure sensitivity in photoshop. that's what I had to do when none of the pressure sensitive brushes showed up and the pressure sensitivity didn't work

Lunaros In reply to Arikachan [2007-12-10 21:32:54 +0000 UTC]

I'm not sure. X__X; I got an old one from my friend who didn't need it anymore. XD;;
If it is, well I'll look for one of those drivers. XD;;
Thank you~

needs-a-bullet [2007-12-09 09:32:40 +0000 UTC]

it's interesting to see how you do things I should use clipping mask layers, normally I just hit 'reserve transparency' not always effective.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Kuurin In reply to needs-a-bullet [2007-12-09 09:34:42 +0000 UTC]

I don't like to use transparency because the shades are hard to edit later on C:> Personal preference I guess~

needs-a-bullet In reply to Kuurin [2007-12-09 09:38:10 +0000 UTC]

yup yup, that's why I say 'not always effective'

ArkillianDragon [2007-12-09 09:17:05 +0000 UTC]

Never seen 'clipping masks' before... That's just a normal mask right? Or is it something else? I've seen people colour linearts by locking the transparency of the black layer (If it's only black- not multiply with black and white) sounds similarish... Um yeah ^^

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

felisdeityus In reply to ArkillianDragon [2007-12-09 10:58:09 +0000 UTC]

Clipping masks are sort of half that - they change the transparent areas on the base image into a mask, and "lock" them on the new layer - however the technique is useless if you don't have any transparent layers, but they can be edited later, whereas using the lock transparent pixels function works on the actual piece (unless you make a duplicate).
A full mask is different again as it is totally editable.

ArkillianDragon In reply to felisdeityus [2007-12-09 19:18:40 +0000 UTC]

Why would you use a Clipping mask and not a full mask then if the full mask is more flexible?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

felisdeityus In reply to ArkillianDragon [2007-12-09 21:25:10 +0000 UTC]

A clipping mask automatically isolates the pixels you want to alter. With a real mask you'd have to carefully select everything first. It's more immediate and easier if all you want to do is not colour outside the lines.

wah!! a tutorial!I love looking at tutorials since I'm really inexperienced >>'' so this helped, I cant wait to try it :]

Also, a question about your lineart: how do you make your lineart so neat and smooth? [if you did it digitally with a tablet, freehanded]
Thanks again for the tutorial :]

Kuurin In reply to OlivaceousT [2007-12-09 09:28:58 +0000 UTC]

I do it digitally free hand with the tablet C: It's easy once you get used to it~
Glad you enjoyed it!

recomant to "scetch" if you use the palet in the corect way or installed it the right way you can use it like a normal pencil (use a 3~5pixel brush) and ALWAYS begin with a 2nd layer X3 we often make that mistake
