Description I worked on my comic book till my brain oozed out of my ears today... Finished a comic board in one day... So I decided to fiddle around for myself! and it's like... 4:30 am here...

I just could not come up with a good title for this...
So this is Stephen Maturin from the Patrick O'Brian novels (or Master and commander movie, you pick). Again. More, many more might come up sooner or later. I can't get enough of him.

I'm about to finish the first book, and all those of you who said Stephen was even more loveable in the books, well you were absolutely right! I'm so happy to know that I still have over 19 books to read!
So In media res means "in the middle of something", in case you asked!
Hope you'll enjoy!

Wow, this is perfect! It looks like he's yelling at Jack to leave off gunnery practice, he's sewing Mr. Pullings back together. Again.

I love your style (who knew Dr. Maturin would look so good as a cartoon? I would totally watch Master & Commander: The Animated Series, btw)!

This is awesome and you have a great skill!!! I am currently reading The Wine-Dark sea and completely devastated to know that I only have five more books left in the series. Up to this book (and I am sure till the very last book) this collection has been an amazeing escape from the day to day hurry of every day life. You help bring Dr. Maturin to life in my minds eye just a little more then he was. Thanks and keep up the great work, I cant wait for the next one.

.... On a side note I hope you do the other characters as well

I love Stephen, last summer I read all 21 books in the Aubrey-Maturin series and I cannot get enough Master and Commander! I inadvertantly became well aquainted with nautical terms just by reading O'Brian, and before I didn't know anything nautical!! {I LOVE STEPHEN awesome art!!}

May I first just say that I think this is fantastic! I love the coloring and the lighting, and especially the wounded man on the table! I also have a question, because I just saw the movie and am highly considering reading the books. Seeing as you have read it, I was wondering if you found all the nautical terminology a hindrance or if you enjoyed the novel regardless (just because I don't know anything about the navy). Anyway, wonderful work!

You've actually drawn doctor Maturin!!
I'm... so amazed! I've tried it a thousand times, ever since I read the first book.

Stephen Maturin is the world's best fictional character. Ever. EVER!
And this picture... Geez, it's so GOOD! You've captured him EXACTLY as I picture him!
You've got more? I've got to look...!

I can't remember if I've commented on this or not and I'm too lazy to check, but even if I have, it deserves a word again: It makes me so happy for the smaller fandoms (I guess only the ones that I'm a part of but whatever) when they get a cool/good artist like you to make neato fanart. Good Harry Potter art is always awesome but I feel like there's a lot more talent to draw from because so many people read Harry Potter. It's a lot more rare to see someone doing great stuff for books/movies that aren't as well-known.

And yes, Stephen is super badass in the books. Omg cannot wait for you to read 'Fortune of War', if you haven't gotten to it yet. He's a total pimp.

kyla79 In reply to snapesnogger [2007-08-03 12:06:58 +0000 UTC]

have you read the books? Maturin is sooooo much more awesome in them. He's like... dark... He kills people, as he's a spy. In the movie I love him, but they cut all his angsty stuff (he's desperately inlove with a woman who only cares for him as a friend and that drives him nuts)
I really am drawn to those type of characters, I guess!

the first one is called master and commander, by Patrick O'Brian
[link]

You'll see, it's not an easy read because of all the naval terms, but the relationship between Aubrey and Maturin is just amazing. And Maturin is such a dark character, he's almost scary! but I've always been into dark characters (aka Snape)... Something tells me you might really like him too, he's totally more awesome than in the movie (and I had a huge crush on movie!Maturin, so...)

Haha, today must be my day, two awesome pics of Maturin on my watch list! (The other by Kruegan.) Strangely you two have very similar looks for Maturin, which I guess is a testament to how... Mautirin-ish the pic is? It's like, this is the true Maturin!

I'm babbling. I can't help it. Maturin rocks. (And I'm obsessed with his surname.) Awesome, awesome Maturin rendish!
