No one can use this apart from me.These are my greatest pixel art, I'm especially happy with the beach one! The colours work really well I think.
These are only some of the battle backgrounds, I'm planning on doing more.

I would just add a watermark if I were you. Although they're reduced in size, I wouldn't have even noticed if I hadn't read the comments. Meaning if someone were to steal it, they'd do it anyway.
In fact, I just copied the downloaded version into paint, and it doesn't look resized at all...
Anyway, onto the deviation itself. You're right, this is your best pixel art to date. The amount of detail on some of these is amazing. Especially two grass ones nearer to the right, and the city one. The one at the top left, and the one two below that, although still great, are lacking in a little detail compared to the others.

Man, it really really pains me that we haven't gotten such detailed backgrounds for battles in the actual games. It's going to suck if they make the jump to full 3D battles before we get something like you've done with these.

They are truly beautiful peices.
My favorites are the Grassy Meadows and the arid forest.
Is the Deep Underwater one using sonar? Looks like sonar rings coming from the players pokemon.

I'm assuming it's light from some sort of submersible. Sonar only appears via a screen.

One more comment; I love the subtlety with which you incorporated the two battle position circles in the scenes. I also love how creatively you recycled 'scene bases' especially in the cave. The unfortunate thing is that that to the untrained eye, the repetition-- if used in an official game-- would probably be met with criticism for being lazy and not appreciated for their brilliance. The rotating system they have going, yeah, I think it's pretty lazy, but um... yeah, tomatoes.

Not really. You're asking him, in his own busy life, to set aside time to make something so meticulous and labor intensive for you, so you don't have to. To imply his refusal of your request would be more self-centered than your requesting him to do such a thing for you, for free... is just faulty logic.

I didn't ask him to do it for free nor right away nor at a pace I demand, just that he could do it. And the only reason I'd ask it of him is because I don't have the skill but he seems to be the best at it. And I believe my logic is sound; denying giving helpful resources to other upcoming game designers seems a bit unfair. Then again it's his work and he is free to decline so that's not an issue but helping would at least be nice and generous.

True I would. I suppose I read into it with an unfair expectation too. I get severely annoyed at people making demands and requests to popular artists (especially the incredibly humble and generous types who wouldn't say anything about it) so I have a nasty habit of jumping in.
I still by no means feel not making such things is at all selfish for him to do/not do, but doing it, I agree, would be wonderfully generous.

if she took money for them maybe.. it isn't self centered to not want to devote HOURS of your artistic time to a complete stranger who demands things for free. Commissioning for a good rate is fine though.
