Ninetails didn’t feel guilty, no matter what the court had said. What she did feel was embarrassed, which was very unusual for her. While the fox considered herself a paragon among kitsune, she still had some respect for those who had come before her ... and she could feel their disapproving eyes with every heavy step she took. Having decided that death was not a sufficient punishment for her actions, the leaders of the city had instead saddled her with payment of the debt she now owed. The first task they set her to was the construction of a suitable monument for Queen Himiko. And not by magic, either. By binding her in a horse’s harness and forcing her to pull rickshaw after rickshaw of the dense stone that would keep the queen’s memory alive for ten thousand years.

Her driver, whom she’d never actually seen thanks to the constraining harness, flicked the whip at her hindquarters. Growling through the ball gag that had been a last-minute addition to her punishment, she pulled harder, moving the rickshaw slowly through the city streets. Unable to move in any direction but forward, her tails bound and leashed so she could not strike at passersby, Ninetails thought in infuriation of the strange looks the citizenry gave her. Most of them didn’t know she’d been responsible for the assassination, but a nine-tailed fox pulling a cart was an unusual sight, even here. She cursed every person who called out insults or simply stared, knowing her words were ineffective and inaudible. The worst days were when that white mongrel came to watch ... she’d get her back one day, she would!
