It wasn't too bad, I suppose (not nearly as bad as the one where I stopped for more than half a year! haha) it's just I've had art block since I finished my 3rd most recent piece, and in my 2nd most recent I still had art block and was working through the whole thing with that feeling where nothing is working and you just feel like a useless artist, you know? Since that point I haven't been able to put two pictures together and I'm still struggling now, haha.Β
Thank you- it is so lovely to hear that my art inspires someone! You're so kind.

Aww, yeah I've had that feeling before! :c when I had my full time job, I literally did no digital artwork for an entire year. The job just drained me and stifled my creativity. Needless to say I quit then went on a 3 month vacation
I'm sure it will all come back to you, we all have little blips! Just be patient I guess, and stalk artists who inspire you because that may fuel your muse again, hehe
Aw you're very welcome!

Ahaha, sounds like you completely deserved that holiday! Never feel bad for stuff you need. c:
I think my muse is coming back to me- I'm in the process of making a full body manip right now. It's not my best work, but I'm pleased with it, still. I have trouble because I'm a bit of a perfectionist, and find it hard to accept something being of a lower standard than usual!

Bright-Button In reply to LacedwithEuphoria [2015-08-30 12:06:45 +0000 UTC]
Haha, I sure did! I came home feeling so much better, so it was well worth it
Ah that's wonderful! Not every piece has to be your "best piece yet". As long as you're happy you gave your best, and if the recipient is happy then that's what counts sometimes I get traditional comms, I complete it and it's really not my thing, I just don't like it - but the commissioner absolutely loves it and couldn't have wanted more, haha. It's just a matter of taste :')
I totally feel you on the perfectionist front, I am just the same on so many things!! Especially when I have an idea in my head, I want it to be exactly as I pictured it XD we shoot ourselves in the foot sometimes! XD

Β
Ah, it is so reassuring to hear someone say that! I say it to myself all the time, but it has more significance when someone else says it to me. I always, without really meaning too, put myself under pressure to make all my art better than the last which consequently is detrimental to my art, as opposed to the intended positive affect. Like you say- I shoot myself in the foot, haha.
I think everyone is their own worst critic, and that's why I love getting positive comments on my art, because it allows me to begin to see through my own faults, and actually try and experience the positives in my art.
I completely feel you on the 'it wasn't what I pictured' problem. I think we all just need to remember that no one can see the image in your head, and so what if the final product doesn't match the preliminary sketch? If that was the case, then it would mean our idea hadn't evolved, or, consequently, improved!Β
I love talking to you.

Bright-Button In reply to LacedwithEuphoria [2015-08-31 21:17:32 +0000 UTC]
Aw yeah I know exactly what you mean. Its to hard to remind yourself that it's okay to be "okay", and that people will eat up your art no matter what because you made it, but when outsiders remind you its always refreshing and reassuring. I'm just the same though, I always push myself to have improved on something since my previous piece! We have to remind ourselves that the commissioners commission us based on the work they have seen of ours - that means nothing really has to change
That's very true, pretty much everyone I talk to on here is their worst critic! But to be honest that's probably very healthy, since it demonstrates self awareness and the desire to learn. Its when we make it compulsory that we must improve when it becomes a hindrance haha
Yeah exactly! Sometimes its best that it doesn't go as planned, because it goes better. When I do my manips now I very rarely have an idea in my head before starting, I just let stock inspire me and evolve the concept as I go. Otherwise I get too stressy trying to get it perfect XD
Aw thank you, I love talking to you too!

I think we share the same mentality!Β
No one, especially artists themselves expect Β anything more than what they have already seen. I hadn't really thought about that part before!#
I think I need to do a bit more of just random stock searching and letting inspiration come to me- it sounds a really good, natural process.Β
I know far too many people who feel so under pressure to be their best all the time and as a result don't want even want to upload some art. I just want to grab all of them and tell them that we all love their art regardless of what they produce and whether it was technically perfect or not!
What frustrates me most is having a complicated concept in my head and not having the ability to carry it out the way I want x.x That's my impossibly high standards at work again!
π: 0 β©: 1
Bright-Button In reply to LacedwithEuphoria [2015-09-02 14:24:38 +0000 UTC]
It certainly seems we think alike, haha!
Absolutely - whenever I look to commission anyone, I base my decision on the overall standard I see in their gallery. If the majority is really amazing, then that's a few odd pieces here and there I'm not quite so fond of, I would still commission them because the overall standard is what I want to pay for. I sure as heck know what it's like to upload a bad piece XD
Yeah it works quite well for me! Of course, if I have a clear spec to follow then I will target specific stock and have to form a general idea of what I want to finish with. But unlike drawing and painting, manipulating is restricted by the resources so we always have to be lenient XD
Aww, that's such a shame! It takes the enjoyment out of it for them too - art should always be fun. In my opinion there isn't even such a thing as a bad artist. My gosh, look at some of the modern paintings that sell for millions, really? That's art??? Okay... XD People forget that effort and consideration is just as valuable, if not more, than technical ability.
Ahh yeah, I've had that! When I first started digital art I remember having so many cool idea, and I tried to fulfill them but my lack of ability just wasn't doing it any justice. I should probably try some of those idea again now, 4 years later where I have more skills haha :3 but equally, I can get impatient when things persistently don't go as I want them, and I'm not sure it's worth the hassle haha!

LacedwithEuphoria In reply to Bright-Button [2015-09-03 19:57:41 +0000 UTC]
Yep, don't we all get a few bad pieces! It certainly, like you say, should not dictate whether or not a person should be commissioned or not, haha.Β
I always find that I get frustrated with stock, as at the moment I can never find stuff that fits together, but I think that's just art block. I envy people with a good eye for what stock goes together, I really struggle. Have you got any tips? cx Also, out of interest, when being commissioned, do you prefer a specific brief, or just something like 'a manip with this character'? I always find that I prefer a specific request, so I know exactly what I can do. I think I have no imagination, haha.
Omg, that thing about modern art is so true! I think that modern art can be interesting, but in a completely different way to a more traditional style of art; with the latter, even if I don't understand it, I can appreciate it, but if I don't 'get' a piece of modern art, I really can't engage with it in any way.
I'm still really struggling to get my art back on track. I just can't find anything that I feel can make fit, and I still feel I can't carry out any of my more complicate ideas ): It's tricky, because I have some motivation, and I want to make things, but I just can't right now.
I think it would be great to try an revisit some old ideas- it cculd really demonstrate to yourself how much you've improved!

I struggle with stock all the time too, when I see people create a really elaborate background I am usually just speechless XD although I did surprise myself in my piece "Expulsion", but that was based on an image so it wasn't so much creative as it was technical haha. The only tip I could suggest is to start either with one image that you can imagine adding onto, or a sketch for a background then find stock to match. When you want a complex background, it's easier to start with an idea than to wing it haha.
When I get commissions I usually like to have some kind of outline/brief. So a character ref or description, some personality traits, background preferences, lighting preferences and if an overall "mood" is desired. Equally, I also like to know what people don't want - sometimes thats much easier to work from than having an elaborately long list of what they like XD you definitely do have an imagination!! It's probably more the pressure of making something they will like that distracts your creativity
Ah yeah I totally agree about the modern art! I'm a massive history fan so the classics always entertain me far more than modern art ever could haha. I just feel that very little effort is put into it a lot of the time, and very little imagination too. Like the classic paintings have so much elegance and detail, they clearly thought an awful lot about what they were creating! Modern art lacks the depth, physically and emotionally
Start with small things, make yourself some personal art, really simple, and then keep going until your muse comes back. I'm forever drifting in and out of my manip creativity! Alternatively, you could ask people to submit suggestions, or characters etc to you just for you to have something nor personal to work on, but no pressure of being paid. That works for some people too :3 the key is patience, your muse will suddenly return to you and then you won't be able to stop ;D maybe it would help if you collabed with someone.... -points to self- ... ;D

I'll definitely have to try doing a sketch first! That sounds like a great idea. Far too often I just float around with no idea at all, haha. I was look at Expulsion when I asked you that; it really is a very striking piece of art, the background and the lighting are stunning!
That sounds quite similar to what I like to get for a commission, although I don't mind getting something even more specific, I like the restrictions- they can bring out my creativity. A cliche, I know, but true! cx I'm trying to do something a bit different from normal manipulations again- I'm trying to do a character body manip thing, without a background, so I don't need to worry about lighting, haha! I think the pressure is restricting my art- it's silly, as everyone is so nice about waiting for their art from me, yet I still feel pressured! I think it's just my personality - I'm a natural duty fulfiller, which doesn't bode well with trying to have a free creative spirit, haha! DX
Ah yes, I love history too. I love going to stately homes and seeing the portraits of the people who once lived there- it makes the past so much more tangible and engaging when you can see the people who walked the same hallways as you, haha. Although I do find it a bit annoying that portrait painters in the past seemed to give all the people the same face; you can't differentiate them from each other, apart from the clothes that they wear! I must admit that I don't have as wide a breadth of experience with different periods and styles of paintings as I would like to have- at the moment I just look at things at think, ahh yes, very pretty, and then I don't look into it further.Β
I would love to do a collab with you! Perhaps we could do one of your characters, and you could choose the stock, and then we could share the rest of the workload? I can note you about it. c:

Haha ah I float around too, most of the time! :') it's the odd occasion where I need to do something more complex that it actually gets sketched hehe! Aw thank you so much! It was so hard to get the stock right and fitting, but it was a good challenge
Yeah I think its a very personal preference how commissions are received, I know several people who prefer to be left completely open with what to make, but then I also know several who prefer to have a good description so they know what to aim for. Myself, I can be quite "moody" with my art, so I like to be left open as much as possible so there's room for me to drift around haha.
Ah that sounds cool!! A good way to practise body prep and colour change etc too, without worrying about grounding. Can't wait to see it!! Pressure affects everyone I think, in different ways. Some people perform better under pressure, others shy away from it. Everyone has to remember that real life comes first though, and whats the worst that can happen if you're late finishing? No one will die haha, and the commissioner may be (at worst) a little annoyed, but not for long because they then get exactly what they wanted. Especially if you give a clear outline of estimated completion times, that's always useful and prevents confusion
Ooh yeah me too!! I went to an open air museum last week where there was restored buildings from the 13th to 20th century, all historically accurate and decorated etc, it was amazing!! But yes thats very true about their faces, the face only changes between eras and genres as opposed to actual human difference haha. And the hirses are real funky looking XD but I do kind of like that as well, it adds character and shows that realism isn't everything, the composition is just as important
Weee yes please!! That sounds perfect hehe, send a note whenever you like! I do have comms to finish buuut sshhh ;D
