I'll Cover You - WF35The male tundra and brown Tokota dragged himself up the slope, slipping as the loose mud spilled out from under his feet. He scrambled to regain his footing, for every moment he stopped to take pause, he only slid back further down the slope. The woman on his back had her legs tightly pinned into his sides and her arms wrapped around his neck. Her face was completely buried in his cream and peach-spotted mane, hidden from the driving rain that pounded them both. Her words of encouragement could do no good at this point. She had to trust that Janus would not give up, for both of their sake.
Finally, after what felt like a half-hour struggle up the bluff, Janus found solid footing and pulled the two of them up onto level ground. He collapsed under all their waterlogged weight and his handler rolled from his back and into the mud. They both panted heavily: Janus, from the unexpected climb up the base of the mountain, and Avalik, from the adrenaline that coursed through her body in the aft
Changing Gears - WF35The rain had subsided somewhat, but did not stop entirely. The thunder continued to roll high above their heads from a great distance, and when it reached them it was nothing more than a garbled grumble. The storm would be over, but not soon enough.
Janus had enough time to rest up for a few hours before they set back out to begin their long trek home. And this time they had three companions.
Alban, the black Barbary-maned male, lead the way. He was sure-footed and the most dominant of the four Tokotas. His ears and eyes were focused on the terrain ahead, keeping a sharp lookout for soggy ground and misleading paths. Vol Eik, the other Barbary, with banded sable markings down his back and flecking spattering his head, chest and shoulders, kept his senses alert to the ever-changing weather patterns or any living creatures they might come across, whether it be friend or foe.
The wild Tokota that had spent the last few hours draped across Avalik’s body to keep her warm and dry padde
Through the Storm - WF35The party of five stopped when they came to a river that wasn’t really a river. The water raged, completely opaque and a sickly pale-brown color. It was entirely runoff from the hillsides, or maybe, just maybe, a beaver’s impressive dam was unfortunately breached. Wherever this water was coming from, it wasn’t here when Janus and Avalik had left home for their fishing trip.
Alban looked upstream, squinting his eyes against the patter of rain. Then he turned his head and looked downstream, as if trying to decide which way would be better. All Avalik saw was miles upon miles of raging water in either direction. They were going to have to cross it somewhere.
To the right, the flood moved swiftly downhill, taking with it bits and pieces of the hillsides it lapped. To their left, branches and clumps of loose earth came pouring around the bend. Even a few small trees could be seen bobbing sadly before finding themselves lodged amidst one another where the current wasn
EPILOGUE
It was six hours until the rain finally stopped. Another four hours passed by the time the flood waters cleared from the valleys and the small pack and lone handler were able to find their own ways home. At a rocky outcrop, Avalik bid farewell to the black Barbary and his sable companion that had followed her the entire day before, the same pair that had accompanied her on multiple trips through the woods and across the tundra in search of the new. Janus, a Tokota bred of wild descent, but domesticated through and through, led the way. His handsome chimeric coat glistened in the overcast daylight, and the tiny beads of water intermingled with and tangled the tundra and brown colors of his fur, more than they already were. Nervously he would glance over his shoulder behind him at the pair in tow.
Avalik rode atop the first wild Tokota that had allowed her to get near enough to touch it. The white female carried her weight easily, but was clearly tiring from their long journey. Avalik hadn't expected to come across her, not after all that they'd been through. They shared a complicated, albeit brief past together. And they were still wary of one another. Avalik was careful not to startle the blind female as she rode, and similarly the wild Tokota made no sudden movements. She had bitten Avalik once before, badly on the arm, when the handler had come too close once before. But now that she reeked of blood, not by her own tooth, something in the wild female triggered a deeply rooted sense of mothering and companionship. She'd felt it when presented with puppies, Avalik's Toki and Dire Yeti, which she'd tried to run off with. While the human chased her down, she'd still allowed her to play with them. And she hadn't forgotten. She would never forget. Mingled in amidst the coppery scent of blood that wafted from the human's clothes was the scent of those pups, of more Tokotas, of varying ages, each with their own unique spoor.
The white Tokota prided herself in her sense of smell. Her eyes no longer worked, they hadn't since she was only a yearling. But she was able to get by, through all these years in the forest, with her ears and nose alone. Eventually, the cold, the frostbite, took her ears as well. And while she did not lose her hearing, she knew she looked different. That's what they called her, 'Frostbite'. She hated that name, a calling to her grizzly exterior. And it seemed as though this human felt the same. Not once in their entire time of knowing each other had she ever directly called her 'Frostbite.'
---
It is said that the day Avalik Rupert signed the papers that officially deemed Wild Female 35 'Tamed,' there was a misprint or miscommunication of some sort. The officiate at the town hall sent the forms back to the bar at which Avalik had been celebrating at least two times, once to have the name written more clearly, and the second time for the name to be dictated for a transcriber to document. The wild Tokota formerly known as 'Frostbite,' is now known locally as 'Ghost.' Some still say the official TCA forms are incorrect. But whether it had been Avalik's spelling, slurred drunken speech, pure naivety of this planet's wildlife, or any combination of the three, no one could say for sure. All that was certain, was March 22, 2016, a wild Tokota named Goats, WF35 was tamed by a very drunk and very volatile young woman.

Thank you! I struggle with backgrounds a lot, too much colors and values. So I painted this one in grayscale value first, then added the color. Might be helpful!
