They were almost two full days into their journey – a 350 mile expedition across the Arctic Wilderness to prove their merit and skill as a team. While it was not exactly a race, Sura and Kaskae needed to cross the tundra, using Inukshuk landmarks to guide their way, and arrive at the finish line safely within five days. It was part of a series of tests, regulated by the TCA officials that certified Tokotas for excellence and breeding.
Sura knew that Kaskae, or Kai as she called him for short, would have no problems passing the tests and receiving his Arms of Akna award – but that did not mean she still wouldn’t worry about her beloved lilac, long-maned Tokota. To ensure that they were well prepared to travel and perform as a team, Sura and Kai had spent the last few months on overnight expeditions – practicing living off the land and working together to find shelter and protection.
Looking out over the tundra, which was reflecting brilliant hues of orange and pink colors as the sun crept lower towards the horizon, Sura began to search for a place where they could set up camp for the night. Ahead, she could see a rock formation creating an alcove – the perfect place to prepare an evening meal, while watching the fading sunset and set up for the night…
