Acuetzpalin carranzai fue un reptil marino prehistórico del grupo de los oftalmosáuridos que vivió en el Jurásico superior durante el Kimeridgiano entre hace 155 y 150,5 millones de años en la Formación La Casita.Fue descubierto en 1980 en la formación La Casita, ubicada en el Cerro de Palotes, en el estado de Durango,México con el hallazgo de 2 ejemplares pero fue recién descrito formalmente a inicios del año 2020, por los autores de su estudio Jesus Alvarado-Ortega y Jair Barrientos-Lara descrito a base del holotipo IGM 9519. Si bien los restos del espécimen miden en total poco mas de 3 metros, la longitud completa del animal está estimada en 4 metros de largo. Acuetzpalin significa "lagarto acuático" en idioma Nahuatl, que es como los mexicas llamaban a los cocodrilos, mientras que el nombre de la especie hace referencia al lider de la investigación de este fosil; Dr. Oscar Carranza Castañeda.

Acuetzpalin carranzai was a prehistoric marine reptile of the ophthalmosaurid group that lived in the Upper Jurassic during the Kimeridgian between 155 and 150.5 million years ago in the La Casita Formation. It was discovered in 1980 in the La Casita formation, located in the Cerro de Palotes, in the state of Durango, Mexico with the discovery of 2 specimens but it was only formally described in early 2020, by the authors of their study Jesus Alvarado-Ortega and Jair Barrientos-Lara described based on the IGM 9519 holotype. of the specimen measure a little more than 3 meters in total, the entire length of the animal is estimated at 4 meters long.
