Description

A Xibalbaonyx oviceps accidentally falls into a dry cenote, from which it will have no escape and will die inside.
This was a giant ground sloth of the Megalonychidae family whose holotype was found in the Zapote Cenote, near Puerto Morelos in Quintana Roo, Mexico, and was described in 2017, which was a subadult, and whose remains consisted of a practically complete skull, vertebrae, limb bones, phalanges and ribs. The animal would have fallen into this cenote while it was almost dry, or with very little water at the bottom, approximately between 10,647 and 10,305 years BP (at the end of the Pleistocene and beginning of the Holocene) falling more than 40 meters , falling in a high part of the interior of the cave, being able to die or not at the instant of the fall, since the possible presence of water at the bottom of the cave could slightly cushion the blow, but not being able to escape due to the way of the cavern (similar to a bottle) ended up dying, and its remains were deposited almost 50 meters deep in the cave. However, the characteristics in the bones of this animal indicate that it may have had climbing adaptations in juvenile specimens, perhaps to cling to their mothers just as modern tree sloths and anteaters do, or as an adaptation to live in Yucatan Peninsula caves.
