Description
A herd of mastodons (Mammut americanum) searches for some water in the depths of a cenote (an underground cave system), but they come across a male Cuvieronius that was also searching for water, while a Xibalbaonyx turns away from the large proboscideans.
Unlike today, during the Pleistocene in the Yucatan peninsula the cenotes were not completely covered with water, to a large extent these were dry and with low water levels, however thanks to the large number of animal fossils found in these caves, it is suspected that the animals descended to the points where water was found to drink, leaving some lost in these large cave systems that extend for kilometers, or died from accidental falls into large natural holes, due to the low visibility of the caves. Animals as large as these 2 proboscideans have been found in these large cave systems, as well as other representatives of the Pleistocene megafauna, mainly at the sites of Loltún and Hoyo Negro.
