Description
This is the arrangement I made for ~Rhed-Dawg for our art swap. I'm still not sure it's fair. She gets a rose and I get this beauty: [link] .To try to make it more fair, I did quite a bit of experimenting and risk-taking in my quest to make this piece a true piece of art. I have to admit, I'm not fully satisfied. I think it's pretty, but it's not everything I had in mind.
The first thing I decided to experiment with is the shading. I used gold wire with translucent crystal and light gold beads and spent way too much time somewhat randomly shading each and every petal. Each petal looked pretty, but when I put it together, I feel like it's too stripey or something. I'm going to have to study flower shading some more to get this better next time. Also, I think if I could do it again, I would make this rose maroon. I'm not sure why, but I just want maroon now.
I wasn't sure exactly how I'd display this rose until I found this vase. I just like it. It's got that cool cracked effect. Evey said that her style was more elegant and traditional. I hope this works. The downside to this vase is that it's a completely different shape. I usually use tall, thin vases. I decided to take a risk with a new shape for this arrangement that I hope fits this vase.
I also used a new leaf pattern, thanks to ~beadlady , who had a wonderful tutorial on her website (which was excellent even though I couldn't read a word of her german instructions). I love the formality of them. I still need to practice them more though.
I finished it off by using 2 sizes of glass pearls to create off-white baby's breath.
I'm still brainstorming how I'm going to ship this.
Evey, I hope you like it! The arrangement is around 9 inches tall. I've never spent so much time on such a small arrangement, but I hope it's worth it.

Thanks! I had someone on another site say that when it was a smaller picture, she thought it was fabric! Gotta love seed beads.

I understand the feeling of not being satisfied with your finished piece, I'm never satisfied with my own, but I find this piece to be breathtaking. The arrangement is very well done. I like how the leaves frame the rose. I haven't had the chance to try out that leaf pattern yet myself.
I think if you concentrated the shading on the lower and inner parts of the petals it would give the rose a little more depth. That's the only room for improvement that I can see, and please take my advice with a grain of salt as I am not very experienced with shading.

I'm glad you like it... that helps me feel like maybe I'm just being too critical (which I am a lot). I definitely think you're right about the shading. Next time I'm going to do practically the opposite of what I did this time... I'm going to keep the shading mainly at the bottom and middle. I just got Donna DeAngelis Dickt's book from the library-- she's amazing with shading, so I've been studying that.

I loved the leaves... it's what popped out at me first
I'm not a beader... or all that great at shading or art to begin with, so take this with a grain of salt
I think if you concentrated the darker beads closer to the bottom of the petals, it might help eliminate the "stripy" look to it. It should give the outter part of the petal a more illuminated look... I think. Also, as you go up on the petal (again, no clue on whether you start from the bottom of the petal or the top, so I'm just refering to placement visually! ), become a little more sporatic with the darker beat palcements...
and the pearls for the baby's breath was a nice touch it looks so much better than if you'd used more beads!
the vase is a little wonky to me... though I do like the lighting effect. I think you could get that same light effect if you use a smooth vase and fill it with those glass pebble things and go all the way to the top instead of just stopping midway like what is usually done... but again, just my opinion
overall, it's beautiful

I think I know what you mean about the shading. I thought it'd look nice if I made more darker beads around the edges, but now I think maybe I should've done more of the opposite.
I'm not too surprised that you're not the first to not like the vase. I think I'd like it better if I could've found goldish glass pebbles to put in it instead of the clear glass ones I used. That would've helped the colors fit together better. What is it about the vase that bothers you? The shape? The texture?

for me it's the Texture... as soon as I saw the pineapple comment, that's all I saw
I think it wouldn't be so blah if it was tinted... any color but orange or yellow.
it's not a bad vase... like I said, I liked the lighting effect of the faceted surface.

Hmmm... I wonder how it'd look if there were dark red glass marbles inside to give it a different color...

maybe sand? or glass stain... it might be cool if you could find some glass stain and just coat the inside of the vase

I don't know anything about glass stain... can you tell me about it?

not really. there's this glass sculptor at the RenFest that I've seen use glass stain to paint his creations. it sort of looks like colored translucent syrup. they just use a regular paint brush to brush it on, let it dry, and it makes the glass look like stained glass. it colors the glass without making it opaque. it's really cool. it made me want to go buy some and just fiddle with it a little

Amy! I think your rose is beautiful! You are just not used to shading so it seems odd to you, but it really is a pretty effect!
Your leaves turned out wonderful, I like the pearls as baby's breath.
I'm not sold on the vase though, but the flower is beautiful...wonderful job!

I loved the vase by itself, but it did take me a while to warm up to it as the vase for this. I guess I've just gotten used to it and it seems more natural now, but the whole idea seemed very awkward for a while because I'm really not used to this kind of shape. It's definitely different.
I'm glad you like the rose more than I do! That gives me hope that Evey will like it. Can you believe it took me nearly an hour to finish each of the largest petals?

It does look rather "Tropical" the vase sort of looks like a pineapple with a tropical like rose!
I'm sure Evey will LOVE it, I do like the shading of your petals, and yes I do believe you that it took and hour for each petal! Making these things are not a fast process!

I never thought of it as looking "tropical" but I guess you're kinda right.
