Description So, funny thing happened to me the other day. I was talking with some friends on Discord, showing them a few things I was working on, and one of them was lamenting about how their drawing style wasn’t as refined as 3D art. This is kind of expected sometimes with artists who don’t have as much confidence in their work, I’ve seen it quite a bit, and have usually tried to do my part to encourage artists to practice, find their medium, try hard, and do it for the fun of it.

Unfortunately the lamenting turned into a kind of...how shall I put this...snarky attitude, and then the individual wanted to just reinforce the fact that “at least theirs was hand drawn”.

Okay. Now, let’s get something straight. At one point I had an art history major in college, and took lots of art classes, and know how to draw things by hand, paint, sculpt, even do some leather and metal working. To this day I still do projects with my children for their various school assignments. The bad part is, I can’t keep my hands steady anymore because of nerve damage done by multiple seizures, so now, hand drawing in detail is out.

So what, pray tell, did I find as something of a substitute? 3D rendering. Which is just as time consuming, complex, and in a lot of cases, more expensive to do than hand drawn art.

Some folks like hand drawn art better, especially for comic book super heroes and heroines, because they feel that it’s more in touch with the original medium. Okay, I can buy that, but mainly it comes down to personal preference. People have a right to their preferences. I don’t jam my artwork down anyone’s throat, so folks are perfectly fine not watching my page if what I do isn’t what they like, and I’m not really going to loose any sleep over people who don’t watch my page.

But to have someone I know just kind of brush off my work because “theirs is hand drawn”? That got my temper going.

My artwork is my zen. It gives me a sense of accomplishment, and therefore, peace. So to have a jealous humbug look down on my work because it’s rendered and not hand drawn, upset that peace. To get my peace back, I rendered Quantum in a style that would look like it was for a comic book. Bold colors, shadows, inked outlines, and all. Heck, I even have crosshatching texture to make it look sketched in places.

Thumb your nose at that haters!

Well, the fact is that there are people out there who try to make themselves feel better at the expense of others, rather than finding something and doing it to the best of their ability and being satisfied with that.
I know when I do a render that I’ve put 100% into it because that’s how I do my work, and so I don’t have to look back and say, “I didn’t do that to the best of my abilities.”
Now, I might look back and say I can do it better now because I have newer and better tools and techniques, but that’s because I’m always learning and trying to get better as an artist.

I totally understand your line of thinking. You only need to improve it if you think you need to. And if others can appreciate it, then that's a comforting feeling I'm sure.

Thanks! I appreciate it!

Considering the response I’ve gotten from this picture and what I talked about, perhaps I should do more in this style...

It's a wonderful piece of work. I'm glad you found a medium that's enabled you express yourself. Character design in 3D is still in development as the industry has this bizarre shift to PBR.

I had a classmate who was really talented in graphics, but he learned later in the term that he was losing his eyesight. It shocked all of us in class. I haven't been in contact with him for years, but I hope he can find another way to pursue his artistic goals if his sight truly degraded.

I’m very sorry to hear about your classmate. I hope he was able to rise above it and do something creative such as sculpture.

Thank you for the kudos. I’ve been practicing a bit of Z-brush, but also got a tool that allows for creation of characters faces from photos.

whether graphic or text, art comes from the heart and should be respected for that alone.

The whole debate about what is art is a non-starter. Most of the 'traditional" artists copied, used reference, created new tech to make their art more of what they envisioned in their minds.

If you aren't using Clip Studio Paint, I'd wholeheartedly recommend it for line drawing and digital painting.

Cheers.

Lady-Quantum In reply to tdpubs [2018-06-15 17:10:41 +0000 UTC]

That’s very true, but that’s also still in a “classical medium” (aka from their own hands in some way) and 3D render artists will tell you, there is a kind of snobbish elitism that comes from traditional artists to where, at best, we’re ignored, and at worst, we’re belittled for our work.

I’ve actually looked at Clip Studio Paint, but, I don’t do the comic-style as often as I do realistic renders so can’t justify the $215.

Thanks for the comments!

Art is Art, never understood the elitism that some feel, if it brings enjoyment what should the format matter?
Keep up being awesome Lady Q.

Well it’s a hundreds of years old style of doing things vs a more modern way of doing things. I think it’s probably threatening to them. Almost like a robot putting a person out of a job, or similar feeling.

3D art is as much a threat to 2D Art as Cinema was to theatre, both have their place and both allow different focus of Art to shine through. They go together not an either or case. Hence why I like both and am happy to see great Art in any format the Artist chooses.

Good for you.  I think hand art can be, and often times is, equally as good as 3D art.  Im astonished by some 'hand drawn' I see.   I think art is art and should be enjoyed for what it is.   Art is different to everyone.  Picasso and Monet certainly were different but both were pretty special, Id say (for what I know of art).  To each his own.  Having someone knock down what someone does in a huff...…. that's not cool.

And hand drawn LQ?  She looks great in every guise.   I'll be interested to see if this amounts to anything more than this but if it doesn't, it's a great image!

Okay, this speaks to me!

One, that looks awesome!

Two; /I/ never have confident in my own work. I turned to DAZ /because/ despite years of practice, I could never manage to draw how I wanted to draw. Years of practice, and it remained terrible. I heard it all; 'you just need to practice more', 'you need to start again from the basics', 'you just need to work even more on the basics!', 'you just need to only draw what other people already drew until you're good enough to draw your own stuff!' Did I mention this /had been years of practice/?! All this advice was stuff I was already trying, had been trying, it just /never/ paid off. I do have a slight issue with my motor control (very slight though) but I've known other people with the same thing to draw phenomenally well! So... I gave up. DAZ was my 'easy option'.

And, you know what? It /was/ and has been easier than drawing. So I assumed for like a year that it was.

Until one of my drawing friends started being mystified at my DAZ images (at the time they were far subpar to my current work, and even now I'm not all that great at this!) and it made me realise, it's just different.

Practice and hard work just doesn't work with drawing for some people like me for whatever reason but the /same amount of effort/ into DAZ produced work that I'm proud of and enjoy learning and improving at.

Sometimes I have my bad days and feel extremely sad I never managed to get anywhere with drawing, because I grew up /loving/ it, but this 3D stuff has given me a great outlet, and doorways into whole communities of people who are so often far nicer, for some reason, than the majority of traditional artists I've come across.

Thanks for this.

Thanks hun!

1) I really appreciate you and your comment. It makes me feel like I’m not alone in my reasons for going to DAZ as my medium of choice.

2) I’ve heard those same lines from art teachers because they wanted something a certain way, and that wasn’t the way I drew for quite a while. I’ve since decided, with my older and wiser perspective, that those teachers were just doing their jobs trying to goad me into expanding my technique and horizons. I can respect that, but if I were taking those classes now I’d tell them to go blow a goat.

For some they can pick up DAZ and it’s off to the races, for me, it took a good two years of continuous effort, trial and error, and help from people here on DA to get me on the right path to where my images began to look how I wanted them to. Always there was support from my family, friends, and watchers. And while traditional artists may frown and look down their noses at us, we are just as hard-working, and skilled as they are.

Thank YOU for this.

That looks similar atleast in my opinion of what you find in Telltale games, which might have been what they did to create the effect of Hand Drawn while still using Renders, regardless it is a awesome picture, and drawn images have a lot of different style, from Anime to Comic book and several variations in those. Personally I think 3D renders can be just as much Art as Drawn, but then what is Art is very subjective
