Description My IDS illo for the week! Response to the "Trayvon Martin case" and Geraldo Rivera's statement that implied Trayvon's parents should have told him not to wear a hoodie. Because 95% of the teenaged population doesn't own one or anything.

I understand Rivera's logic, but that doesn't excuse the fact that nobody should have to police the things they wear to ensure they are not killed on the way home from the convenience store.

None of this would have happened if George Zimmerman just listened to that 911 dispatcher and didn`t engage him

George Zimmerman followed him, so Trayvon hits him. Then he shoots him. I listened to the 911 call, he says 'he ran' 30 seconds through. I'd run too if I saw a man in a car following me home. He followed that stereotype, and he didn't pay the price. America's messed up, just messed up.

Yeah, it's completely fucked no matter how you look at it. The "Stand Your Ground" law needs to be repealed. Though, we all know if Martin had shot Zimmerman because he felt threatened (who wouldn't, being followed by a dude twice your size and age), there wouldn't be an acquittal.

You. You took the words out of my mouth. If Zimmerman followed him and Trayvon shot, it would be the same case, even if they still have evidence.

(I thought I commented on this one initially?...da fuq.)

When I saw this on my dash I had a crazy amount of respect for you. I feel like for as big and unsettling as the whole case is becoming (especially with the race conflict aspect of it) it is/was hella brave to put up your honest opinion. Even while this was a class assignment. Still awesome.

It's really sort of sad that people on DA seem a lot less plugged into the current politics of their country(s)--or international issues, for that matter. It's nice to see people's thoughts and opinions of real-world issues that aren't related to a fandom.

Good show!

I do, of course, feel very uncomfortable when it comes to issues of race, just because I am a midwestern white girl. But especially considering the fact that my partner is Latino, I have become very aware of the rampant racism that exists in this country. Hell, since I am white, people think it's perfectly ok to make jokes about, say, Mexicans around me if they don't know me well. I was shocked to discover how much I didn't know and once I enrolled in school again, started doing a lot of research into the history of immigration in this country, etc. It's mindblowing, the stuff you don't hear about on the news. I'm so glad for the Internet, now, because things get out so much more quickly.

Just wanted to clarify, though: This isn't exactly a class assignment I have a job with the school newspaper, and we get input into what goes into the paper and what we'll end up drawing. I... tend to get the assignments like this because I'm not afraid to approach the subject of race, haha. I did one that I didn't upload to the internet that was... pretty hairy LOL regarding Ron Paul and ever since then I've become sort of the "controversial subject" artist. XD

xxdhxx In reply to ladylaguna [2012-04-26 03:58:23 +0000 UTC]

Yeah. Navigating race issues while white is an entire lifetime of politics in itself. I don't thin a lot of white folk know how much 'white privileged' and other social factors related to even appearing European affect them. In a strange way, I'm not unhappy or gracious for the amount of white guilt I have. I'll never know the struggle of being a PoC, so the best I can do is be mindful of race issues and educate myself on them from as many angles as possible. (That sounds so naΓ―eve and self-felating when it's written down.)

That makes it even more awesome that it was done as a non-assignment, then! And hey, 'controversial subject' artists are also the ones that tend to get more press because they stick out more. The last thing DA needs is another cutesy-twee, 'safe subject' artist.

That case is terrible, I cannot even begin to describe. But I like the way you deal with it in the picture. As you said above is hard to come up with something fun out of such a terrible story, but it's also a good way to show it to the reader. Plus ridiculous arguments call for this kind of counterattacks.

I seriously love this concept. Geraldo is the definition of idiot.

Geraldo doesn't know what a gangster means or what they look like.

Last time Iο»Ώ checked Gangsters like the Mafia, Yakuza, Triads, Bonnie and Clyde, Alcapone and other gangsters all wore business suits just like Geraldo Rivera.

Plus hoodies have been around since the dark ages the purpose of a hoodie is to protect you from rain, snow, the cold, and the sunlight and it's stylish. Also the orthodox catholic monks wear hoodies all theο»Ώ time! Does that make themο»Ώ a gangster? No

I havent heard about this case,im guessing Trayvon got shot by some cops for being..hmm 'average'?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ladylaguna In reply to Enna-Illim [2012-03-27 02:37:16 +0000 UTC]

Trayvon was black, and he was wearing a similar outfit, carrying tea and skittles and talking on his cell phone, while walking through a gated community where his father lived. A neighborhood watchman thought he looked suspicious. They got into a fight and Trayvon was shot and killed. A lot of people are angry because they believe it was racially motivated, and the watchman wouldn't have found him suspicious if he was white.

Geraldo Rivera went on record saying that Trayvon wouldn't have looked suspicious if he wasn't wearing a hoodie, and that he always advised his son not to dress the way Trayvon was dressed. Of course, as you pointed out, he was dressed the same way a lot of kids his age dress.

Ouch,I think I've heard of this on the news; It's a shame though if it is racism,if not your own local poilice who can you trust? Like honestly,it's mad and nothing but. Worst thing is how he defended himself instead of saying he was wrong, only drawing more drama out. But I mean, thats the world for you,not much anyone can do πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ladylaguna In reply to Enna-Illim [2012-03-27 03:34:38 +0000 UTC]

I think that there's a lot that you can do! Make your voice heard when you see injustice or ignorance, and make people understand that it is not okay. Our taxes pay for our police force and everything else, so we have the right to hold them accountable.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Enna-Illim In reply to ladylaguna [2012-03-27 03:38:35 +0000 UTC]

Yes but even with repition of fighting for something,it does help,no doubt about that! But soon all those supporters would fade off or think it's solved and dandy when nothings gotten better or it's just out of the media for a long time. Of course racism is forever an issue but with this specific case some people have other thoughts, and most dont hate the police for killing a black child but for killing a child point blank really. Hopefully if everyone cares enough about somthing the world will take action, but there's a lot of people who won't care and make those numbers in helping a cause less.
