Description
The first week of teaching really is a pain in the butt, as Minerva knows, hence she decided to see how Severus is getting on. Judging by the headdesking, not too well.I'm new to drawing with a graphics tablet and haven't drawn or attended arts class in ages, so I'd really like feedback that could help me improve.

I should do a follow-up one with Severus drowning under a pile of essays he has to correct. By tomorrow, naturally.
I have long suspected that given how much homework the Hogwarts staff give their students and how easy it was to get a time-turner for Hermione, they must be standard issue among the Hogwarts staff.

Lol, I'll look out for it. O.O I just noticed this wasn't in my favs! *headdesk* Now that I look at this drawing again, I just noticed the background. I love how the window of the office is the view of the lake. I always imagined the water to be murkier but I like it clear. Plus I've never imagined window in the office but I think I prefer his window over any other one just for the view

How many teachers have done the same no matter how many years of teaching? LOL Love It. Poor Prof Snape one of the youngest teacher at Hogwarts.

We're curious, did you intend this to be on the "Snapetember 1981" challenge theme for #Spinners--End ?

Well, it was inspired by seeing the contest, but I didn't really feel confident in submitting it, that's why I didn't.

Nice amusing idea, nice colour scheme, but it's too dark and with too little contrast, so it's hard to pick one bit apart from another - his head blurs into the table and his robes too much - and the fingers are too short, even allowing for foreshortening. I suggest a light-source which would cast shiny highlights on his hair, thus giving his head more definition.

Ok, I edited the hands and added the highlights on the hair. Better?

Only just now getting to grips with the messaging system on dA - good grief it's user-hostile, no wonder I put it off.
Much better as per seeing what's going on but the hands are odd - the little finger on the right hand and all the fingers on the left are too short. If they're actually intended to be long but crooked you need to vary the highlights along the top to show changes in direction.
I'm OK, except crammed into a house which is way too small. The council pays me to stay home and assist my arthritic mother. Not doing much writing because the whole fanfic scene has started to depress me utterly.

Claire! How have you been? I didn't know you were on DeviantArt! (I used to be "Featherwish" on FF.net in '05 and you used to give me great feedback on my fic before I lost the password for that account and gave up on the fic due to DH).
Thanks very much for the advice, it as spot on as your advice usually is. I'll try to add those highlights, that sounds fairly doable- not sure I'll manage to edit the hand, but I'll see.

That's very flattering, thanks! I suppose digital painting does have the advantage of being able to change things as often as you want. I'd have loved to do that in art class!

at the moment in desktop class we're currently working in photoshop and experimenting on pix that the teacher has given us. my teacher said that we'll be working on the drawing tablet in class later on down the track and when we do she said i can bring in some of my drawings and re-do them in photoshop, along with the current ones that i'm working on

LadyMothwing In reply to Servina [2010-02-21 11:07:28 +0000 UTC]
Whoa, you have desktop classes? And you work with PS? Kids, lawn, get off, etc. Or are we talking tertiary education here?
The last arts class I ever had - in grammar school - involved watercolours and the local pond. I think the only time we ever saw a computer was when we worked on the yearbook for our final year. My, my, how times have changed.

yes. and so far it has only been what ever the teacher gives us we change. for example changing the colour of the car. simple little bits and pieces.

Well, I suppose it's best to start slow...? I know that a friend of mine spent her first semester of typography class copying "A"s their teacher had handed out. Nothing else. Just "A"s. o.O

I used to rather enjoy it. Now there is this moment where I re-read the plan I've written in all its theoretical glory and I see a live-action version of it run through my head with my actual students.
Then comes the head-desking.

LadyMothwing In reply to northangel27 [2010-02-21 11:11:48 +0000 UTC]
Once I've finished my degree I'll be teaching children between 11 and 19 full-time. For the last two years I've been teaching Special Ed kids and only interned schools, right now I'm working at a tutoring centre - my students are nearly all between 16 and 19. Close to their finals and realising a couple of months beforehand that they might need some help. Because finals just creep up on you...?

northangel27 In reply to LadyMothwing [2010-02-21 15:10:50 +0000 UTC]
Ah, okay. I taught Special Ed, and elementary aged children back when I was still teaching. I got tired of the politics and parents, and finally quit. Now I am a trainer/curriculum designer in a corporate environment. It has it's drawbacks too, but is a much better fit. I don't think I have the patience for very small children (which, incidentally, is probably why I don't have any of my own).
Good luck with your teaching career!

LadyMothwing In reply to northangel27 [2010-02-22 11:34:56 +0000 UTC]
Thanks! I know I wouldn't have the patience for Primary Ed or Special Ed long term - and I love working with my older students. I guess one of the advantages of work in your kind of environment is that the people want to be there, isn't it? Motivating people who really don't want to be there but don't have a choice and are hell-bent on passing on their bad mood is probably the least favourite part of my job.

Yes, adults are more motivated to learn, because it is their job on the line if they don't. Kids (well a lot of them anyway), just don't seem to get that their education today, effects the job, and hence quality of life they will have as adults.
