Indianapolis Zoo, Indianapolis, Indiana

Two Queensland koalas, native to Australia and on loan from the San Diego Zoo, star at the Indianapolis Zoo, 1200 West Washington Street. “Koala presented by Citizens Gas” opened to the public May 24, and this very special, limited-time exhibit runs through September 1, 2008. It brings a unique brand of Aussie magic to a new generation of Zoo visitors who may not have been around the last time koalas visited Indianapolis in 1994 (or the time before that, in 1986).

The two koalas were too young to fly alone, so their keeper from San Diego accompanied them, making certain they settled right in to their new exhibit at the Zoo. The young koalas will spend lots of time chilling out on their perches and munching eucalyptus leaves, eliciting lots of “oohs and aahs” from their adoring public.

Extensive renovations to the Zoo’s Forests Biome ensure the two marsupials have everything they need for their brief stay. In fact, they probably feel as though they’ve jetted off for vacation in their native land. Species such as a trio of Australian finches -Gouldian, owl and shaft-tail, a White’s tree frog, bearded dragon lizards and a carpet python, all indigenous to the land down under, are on exhibit at the Zoo this summer, adding to the Aussie ambiance and helping the koalas feel right at home.
