On a side-note: An old DW fan (as in a fan of the original series) told me that the Master WAS the Doctor, in his thirteenth incarnation. I don't know exactly if that's true, Wiki is sadly lacking in confirmation or not confirming it. At least last I checked....
Which is creepy then. Since I know a few people who are Master/Doctor slashers....

Well, I've since learned more (my absence was primarily due to a- lack of Internet access, and b- watching TONS of classic Who. What my nii-san thought was the Master being the Doctor, was actually someone named the Watcher (who looks surprisingly like the Traveller from Star Trek TNG...), who was some spirit-correlation of all thirteen of the Doctor's regenerations. But Nyssa and Adric thought that it was the Master. Ah, the wonders of faulty memory.
Turns out, the Master was a former class-mate of the Doctor's when they were in the Time Lord Academy.... Yeah, as I said, I've been looking into it, which is also why I didn't get on until just now. That and I sorta forgot my username and passcode when my laptop died.... ~//_//~

PS, the Rani was a fellow classmate, too. She got sent into exile for experiments gone wrong. She had made a rat end up eating the President's favourite cat, then I think it turned on him, too... She's kind of Hermione gone wrong.
The Doctor said, in the end of series three of the new Who, that all applicants to the Time Lord Academy had to look into the Eye of Harmony. And that one of three things happened; they either get inspired, go mad, or run like hell. (paraphrasing of course) The Master went mad, the Doctor ran like hell, and never stopped running. I think the Rani was inspired.... To become a scientist in it's purist form. No moral, no pity, just experiments....
