Description

Werewolf Man AKA Haddock (who I've been posting art for on my Instagram since he's the main character of an animation I'll be working on) has an admirer!  Her name is Isolde, and she’s figured out his little secret though she's not letting on...

Ahh ha haha! I've been putting off reading this until I wasn't busy, but I don't have much self control and have succumbed to temptation.

This hybrid art style is great; keeping the textured pencil lines lends a pleasing energy to the line art, and I quite like the way you've coloured and lit this. Also, these character designs are great (and the regency clothing so pretty ).

Isolde's flirtatious expression in the second panel is wonderful. Haddock, I very much fear that your studied aloofness will prove insufficient to protect you here XD

This looks so cool! Regency? Werewolves? Duelling?
Sign me the heck up!

Haha!  I try to do that with webcomics but always cave (unless I'm so busy I forget one updates!).

Thank you so much!  I was trying to figure out a way to quickly color my sketches in photosop when I landed on this method--it's now one of my personal favorite styles.

Isolde is honestly a lot of fun to draw.  She's also one of those characters that I'm still getting to know as I write her.   Haha!  Haddock needs to just give up--there's no escape!!

Hope you enjoy the rest of the story!

Well hello Mr Wolfy and Full-Moon-erley with £10,000 a year! *swoons* I love his sweet little nervous gulp of his drink and Isolde looks very sultry here. Regency meets gothic- I ship this already!!!!

LOL  Being a wealthy Regency Era werewolf man makes him 200% more attractive.

I'm having so much fun working on the dynamics and story of the two of them!  I've got most of the crucial parts sketched out, I just need to color them and come up with some small story pieces for each.

Yay! I can't wait to see them!

Oh this is going to be cool! I really like your style of characters. Seeing them animated would be really neat.
I like the werewolf's red eyes.

Thanks!  The animation style is going to be more simplified so I won't get hung up on too many details and can add more small movements and the like.

Uh oh.... That werewolf better run the other way! You're going to do an animation of this? That will be awesome! Are you going to make it look like this or are you going to make it look like your Maelstrom pages?

LadyPep In reply to PhoxnSparky [2017-09-26 15:16:39 +0000 UTC]

The animation style is going to be much more simplified than my usual style (so that I won't get bogged down in details).  Here's some character design concepts so you can get an idea of what it'll look like!

YES!!!

This is so awesome! It's like a sushi roll of everything I love! Regency era werewolf romance!

The lighting in this is so well done! I'm still trying to get a grip on lighting!!! AAAHHH!

Oh! He's so shy! Or he's doesn't want anyone to get close to him. Either way, this is charming!

LadyPep In reply to saylem [2017-09-26 15:28:10 +0000 UTC]

Haha!  Thanks!  I really simplify my lighting with this style so I can emphasize the pencil lineart (the Hard Round Pressure Opacity brush for shadows is my best friend when working with this look!).

:3 It's a little bit of both!

She's so lovely, her eyes are fantastic, and I love what you did with the slanting shadow over Haddock in the second panel . Say YER

LadyPep In reply to Sleyf [2017-09-26 15:23:40 +0000 UTC]

Thank you!  Her character design gave me some trouble at first (it reminded me that I need to work on making my lady characters look different from each other ).  I've been trying to push myself with different kinds of shadows with this pencil/digital style--it's always nice to see an experiment turn out successfully!

Don't chicken out, Haddock >__>

Sleyf In reply to LadyPep [2017-09-27 09:25:50 +0000 UTC]

She looks so great (I have the same issue but with male characters, they end up looking sorta the same...)
Yeah! I was looking at the lines and wondering about them, they look like marker but I think they're digital, I kind of like it and the way they seem almost opaque over colour, like marker

he can't, he appears to be trapped in a corner *sweats while trying to find an escape route*, she's lovely, if he declines then...then...he deserves a kick up the bottom sah! Decline too many times Haddock, and you'll be stuck with only the matrons taking pity on a young toy boy - is that what you want?

LadyPep In reply to Sleyf [2017-10-03 00:44:47 +0000 UTC]

Thanks!  Whenever that happens I have to go to photographs and portrait paintings to use as ref/practice to make sure I'm not making a Clone Army. lol

It's a lot simpler than that, actually!  I sketched the lines traditionally and just turned them into lineart when I scanned them in and set the layer to Overlay.  It's a nice way to color the lines without actually having to lock the layer and color them manually (which takes a buttload of time on the comic...)!

Can't have a bunch of old biddies as an entourage--that'd shoot down his self esteem for sure! lol

Sleyf In reply to LadyPep [2017-10-04 08:29:09 +0000 UTC]

I stubbornly refuse to use references - no I say, no no no *tantrum* (mostly because I'm unable to associate real life features or faces with the image of the character in my head)

Wow really?  How do you not end up with a really filthy looking drawing with flecks floating about and weird smudge shadows?  Work clean I suppose (and trusty putty eraser)

No no, he's not ready for the Pensioner Posse or Biddie Brigade yet! Granny Groupies.

LadyPep In reply to Sleyf [2017-10-08 01:02:11 +0000 UTC]

I usually end up mashing several people together until I get an idea of what I want the character to look like.

I think sometimes I work a little too clean. lol  I use three different erasers to make sure there's no unwanted squiggly lines trying to make their way into the picture.

LOL I bet all three clubs meet up weekly to decide which unfortunate bachelor to stalk bat eyes at.

Sleyf In reply to LadyPep [2017-10-08 08:59:21 +0000 UTC]

There are some characters I just can't envision at all, but then there are some who instantly appear in my mind's eye.  It's sort of unrelated, but I find it a bit strange how some people can 'hear' what they want their character to sound like when really all I hear is my own voice lol (how horrifying)

I WISH I could work that clean!  Even with erasers I end up with ghost-lines and everything is sort of grey (I need some of that blue lead you have - actually that reminds me to go look for some) - does it erase well?

Ahem, I think you mean 'which lucky bachelor' - they pick the name out of a knitted hat (donated by the Aven Knitting (witchcraft/naturalists) Society who are in league with every old lady gathering everywhere - it's a conspiracy, like the Illuminati - in fact, the old lady network probably created that conspiracy to throw others off their scent so they can go stalk young men in peace from the shadows)

LadyPep In reply to Sleyf [2017-10-10 03:36:25 +0000 UTC]

lol Most of my characters' voices I tie to either singers or actors; I have to force myself to really hear them though, or else they'll end up sounding like Generic Male or Female Voice (like Siri!).

Oh man!  That lead is the best!  It's really soft and erases nicely (although it will stain your erasers--I typically use a separate mechanical pencil for all my colored lead so that I won't have to worry about smudging blue streaks everywhere).  I found it on Amazon and have it tucked away in my wishlist so I can order it again.

Each new initiate also gets a pair of snazzy opera glasses and "The Mature Woman's Guide to the Young Man of Today."

Lol, robot voice *insert emotion here*

Oooh thanks! I only recently started using coloured pencil to try sketching with, but it stains the paper so much that it's been more of a failure than a success, so to find something which erases well is yet more wonder to add to my stationary hoard

Like a birdwatcher's bingo book! They can tick off the types  available when they espy them

LadyPep In reply to Sleyf [2017-10-12 21:49:05 +0000 UTC]

No problem!  I thought I could get away with colored pencils too, but I think whatever they use for the colors just doesn't mix well with pencil or pen.  That, and I was using Crayola Colored Pencils because I didn't want to "waste" my Prismacolors (those things are expensive...but I think Copics win out in the "expensive art materials game").

Sleyf In reply to LadyPep [2017-10-16 08:55:02 +0000 UTC]

That's very true! It's like they want you to only use them for colouring dammit. (coloured pencil and regular pencil are ew)
Oh god, yeah, i have a set of Prismacolors and they're gold, i''ve had them for years now because I ration them.  I'm grateful that the majority of my supplies have been birthday gifts so the price was hidden - though I have been buying refills and replacements and they were pretty shocking...

LadyPep In reply to Sleyf [2017-10-17 21:32:06 +0000 UTC]

That's one of the reasons why I switched to Faber Castell pens (because those Crayola ones are just too light and the Faber Castells give such nice, vibrant colors).  I got all of my Prismacolors as birthday gifts...from Junior High. xD  I rarely use them just because of the outrageous price to buy ONE pencil alone!  I think the only one I bought for myself was a black pencil because that's the color I use a lot...

Sleyf In reply to LadyPep [2017-10-19 06:47:09 +0000 UTC]

Faber Castell have always been one of those 'posh' brands I remember always wanting throughout my young school  life.  I remember, my older sister got a set and it was as if gold had just entered the house *on a velvet cushion* - friends at school all had them and I was like...stuck with cheap no-brand names...*envious look*
Now i have my own posh set - it's triple layer...for extra poshness to make up for what I never had. They're watercolour too.
Lol i got mine at Uni I think - and yes, I've gone through loads of blacks myself over the years! Despite people saying never to use it...how can you never use it?

LadyPep In reply to Sleyf [2017-10-26 04:15:06 +0000 UTC]

They're the first markers I started using since I stopped using Crayola ages ago when I realized how they caused so many streaks and dried out way too quickly.  And that they blended horribly... *insert childhood memory of staining your bright markers with black markers here*

That's so niceee!  I was excited to find out about Faber Castell's layering abilities when I got my first little mini pack.

I don't know why the black pencil always becomes a stub!  I can't think of why I'd use it so much when I've got a bunch of other lovely colors to contribute to my art.

Sleyf In reply to LadyPep [2017-11-10 20:44:42 +0000 UTC]

Hahaha oh you know, sometimes I still do that (staining the markers i mean) and it doesn't feel any less horrifying.

At first I was also a bit snooty, as I had the prismas before and after you try those, everything else seems inferior, even the superior Fabers, but i have learned the error of my ways, Faber-Castell has not fallen from grace.

I used to use it for outlining, to cover the graphite and make things stand out after colouring, so the black was always tiny - I also did the big 'art no-no' of shading with black and grey. I don't care, I am not ashamed *defiant*

Thank you!  I'm thinking of using this kind of technique for short vignettes in between the volumes of Maelstrom (it's really nice because I don't have to color any lineart when I set the lines to Overlay!).
