Something for the Challenge!

Brenton Clark is the first human character I uploaded onto dA way back in 2011 (or at least the one who was the most developed) when I was still a sophomore in high school.  Brent was a gangster from the 1940s who came from an impoverished past but worked his way up on the streets until he was the head of a criminal empire.  Life was going smoothly for him until a kid named Chris showed up at his place claiming to be his son.  Turns out that Chris is indeed related, and Brent is forced to take him in or send the boy to an orphanage since his mother recently passed.

I don’t really recall the rest of his story since I rebooted him that same year as a down-on-his-luck con artist who ropes a street urchin named Louie (revamped version of Chris) into helping him con a big time gangster.  Brent later became Vic when I came back to the story idea during my senior year of high school and set it in the 1920s--his current version is a cop who goes undercover in a powerful crime lord’s operation to expose the bootlegger’s crimes so he can have evidence to arrest him (as the crime lord has been terrorizing the streets for the past few years).

Brent also went on to inspire certain aspects of Trenton, such as the estranged child and dabbling in not-quite-legal activities parts of his character, so his legacy lives on even if his character doesn't!

Oooo! Great character- you should definitely draw him more often! I love the 'James Bond' poster style you have going on here, it's great!

Thank you!  Sadly he has been pared away into other characters and no longer exists in this form, but the most "direct" version of him is Vic from my 1920s mafia story idea!

Brenton and Trenton... I'm starting to see a pattern in your character names.

In all seriousness, I like the colors in this one!

LOL

Thanks!  It was fun exploring his character again (even if it's probably for the last time lol).

What an interesting character, you ought to revisit his story for old times sake! I really like the sound of him being the undercover cop. That version sounds pretty intense and thrilling!

Gambit (the undercover cop one) is still a story I'd like to return to one of these days because I've invested so much time in developing the characters and it would be a pity to not write that story!  It's definitely one that will be later down the line since it'll involve some research about the 1920s Chicago culture and Italian mafia of that time period...

Most defiantly. Once you've got a good story you've gotta right it! And most of the time the ones that take the longest to develop turn out to be the best ones.

Don't you love when a character lives in your head long enough to tell you what they want to do with themselves? XD Sounds like he's gone through a lot of fleshing out o: All his backstories are pretty interesting too!

I love the feel of the pic too. ;; You can tell he's not someone to be messed with....that or he's judging you so hard right now. XD

lol He wasn't satisfied with his original incarnation so he forced me to change him during the same year of his conception!  I think this was back when I would come up with everyone's backstories in my head and didn't write them down because I have a vague idea of the story, but I have no physical writing relating to it (at least none that I can find...I have a lot of loose USBs with stories on them floating around in my desk drawer... >__>).

Thank you so much!  I wanted to give him that hard, no-nonsense look from the old sketches I had of him.   His 1920s cop version is so much more fun!!

I have google docs that are kind of the same way... >>; He clearly wanted to choose his own backstory. ..you must make him pay- :SHOT:

I love it XD I'm very jealous of your expressions. ;3;

I used to have just one USB with story ideas on it but it ran out of room. XD  His reward is having his character dissected up among several other characters--it was for a good cause!

!! Thank you!

Oh wow, you sure presented a stunningly striking portrait here, with the gold band of light. It's also interesting to see how he evolved from being a main character on the wrong side of the law, to eventually becoming the law in his latest reincarnation! He lives on (and spawned other characters) I think I only have one who did that (unconsciously)

Thanks for taking part and sharing Brent with us! (being the head of a criminal empire would have been fun to explore *that gangster picture springs to minds again lol*)

Thank you!  It's not as detailed as I would've liked to have made it (since I was working on several other things that needed to be finished before this month is out!), but I'm glad I was able to slip it in!   Even though this type of lighting is a blinding pain in the neck when it's happening to you, it sure looks dramatic! lol

That's generally what happens to all my old characters; a lot of them I Frankenstein with others since I don't have the heart to abandon them!

My pleasure!  It was fun digging through my gallery and picking an old OC to draw again (and also painful seeing that old art, haha!).  He can hire them out if they're ever in need of a job...or when Gaia fires them for failing to bury the body deep enough. XD

That's fine, I think the way you presented it, more simplistic like this is actually a lot more powerful an image than something more detailed (in my opinion anyway)

Yes exactly lol, it's that sneaky 'sharp' sunlight that goes right to the back of the eye *squints in pain and ruins the drama*

Lol mine are either forgotten, or languish in limbo until I decide to love them again.

Oh, that's good to know! ^^  I was thinking of throwing in some art deco background elements but the deadline was closing and I need to work on my background skills some more...  I've been trying to figure out a more simplistic style for the comic anyways (since I spend a crazy stupid amount of time working on a single page RIP ME)

Poor abandoned children. XD

Sleyf In reply to LadyPep [2018-06-07 14:49:51 +0000 UTC]

Hmm well if you ever feel like you need a background, you could always attempt a shapeed frame rather than an entire background image within the rectangular frame - that adds the illusion of a background even if there isn't one (if done right), but backgrounds are horrible, I hate them with a passion (digital ESPECIALLY). and Art Deco is all about the straight lines, which makes it even more of a hellish thing to  consider tackling.

Honestly I'm not sure there is a simpler way to comic (I mean mine are the simplest you can get and they still take forever, so I can't even imagine how long yours take, they actually have DETAIL)

We like to think they live happily somewhere in a place where all abandoned characters collect, helping one another find whatever they are missing...actually that sounds like it would make a good story

LadyPep In reply to Sleyf [2018-06-13 15:25:12 +0000 UTC]

Oh yeah!  I've tried that with pictures in the past but I think I might have forgotten about that trick. ;^^  Digital backgrounds are weirdly hard when compared to drawing them on paper!  I feel like you can get away with more on paper with vague shapes and squiggles that look like background elements that you can't do digitally.

My Art Deco background would have looked like a drunk person had designed it. lol

If there are, I haven't figured them out yet!  I bet the people who do it for a living probably know...

That makes me think of a Ray Bradbury short where all the characters from famous books lived on Mars because people on Earth had burned their books and saw them as "evil."  I don't remember what it's called but it was good!
