We don't actually know whether or not Severus fully intended to become a Death Eater at sixteen. Lily assumes it, but she refuses to let Severus answer one way or the other. She just dumps him, and lets him fall into darkness. What would he have done if she'd given him a genuine choice -- the Death Eaters, or me? We'll never know.

I'm not sure, it sounds like she did give him that choice but he still hung out with Death Eater wannabes and continued to get more into the dark arts while justifying his friends. It wasn't so much he calling her a mudlbood as reliease that's what he thought about Muggleborns in general. He thought he could somehow have both her and be a Death Eater, he probably believed Voldemort was a good guy and not the megalomania who tortured enemies and followers alike. Because Voldemort built up his power gradually, there wasn't all out War until sometime after Severus's fifth year so Voldemort was very attractive to people who weren't necessarily evil or power hungry. His true colours were only revealed later.

So Severus might not have realised what being involved with a muggleborn really meant if you wanted to be a death eater but he soon did.

I could be wrong but I think Lily just reached a point where she couldn't be friends with him. It might have been the wrong choice but you can't always tell, sometimes you do have to let go of someone.

I suspect Lily had wanted to dump her creepy, un-cool Slytherin friend for a long time, and the word mudblood had little to do with it. That slip of the tongue gave her a golden opportunity to reject him on a point of principle and feel noble about it, rather than having to say, "I'm sorry, Sev, I don't love you," and feel like scum.

Lily probably didn't realize that inside Slytherin House was literally the only place in the castle and grounds that Severus was safe from ambush by the Marauders, who had the Map and the Invisibility Cloak that allowed them to track him down anywhere. How was Severus supposed to avoid his housemates? Eat in the kitchen and sleep in the greenhouses?

I'm not saying Severus was completely innocent, but there was a lot of blame to go around, and the so-called dark wizard was the only one who ever apologized.

I don't think Lily would have cared about that, he'd always been like that and she seemed happy to call him her best friend but it was probably a very dangerous and confusing time. Slytherins were cursing Gryffindors and vice versa, a dark lord was gaining power, being muggleborn was bad, strong, rigid opinions flying everywhere and she and Severus were sort of stuck in the middle. Their friendship was probably very unique but they were surrounded by people who hated the other in the friendship.

She wouldn't have known about the map and cloak so it would have been harder for her to see how the Marauders had any advantage. Also, Severus probably was cursing them when he could. I think it was more two against one than four, pettigrew preferred to watch with Remus pretending it wasn't happening. still uneven but not as bad.

I always thought she tried to give him a chance to get away from the death eater club but he was too fascinated by the power and prestige he could earn. He underestimated what being apart of that meant so he thought it was no problem to have that and her. It is possible that she was trying to protect him, if he'd insisted on becoming a death eater, being friends with her would have made him a target.

While they were young, 1st year, 2nd year, the slytherins and death eaters wouldn't have cared much about who he was friends with but as he got older, it would have mattered more. surrounded as he was with them, they might have ended up hurting him if he'd stayed Lily's friend. She might have been scared of what Severus could become if he was calling her mudblood, we don't know how he acted towards other muggleborns.

Just my thoughts, I don't think she just wanted to get rid of him, I think they were both in a really bad time and situations. If it had been in Harry's time, it could have been very different.

And Snape retreated, keeping love is pure. He did not seek Lily against her will. Although this does not make him innocent, but still justifies it in some way.
