Description First things first. This is a spoiler pic from my story "Absolution's Pursuit." Even though I have not written it yet, anyone who is reading the story will understand this scene. If not, go read the story! lol!

Also, this is my first attempt at drawing a tortoise. I think I could have done a better job on the shell, but over all I think it turned out okay. I know you can't see Sess and Kagome's faces in this, but for some reason I really wanted the drawing to be from this angle.

Enjoy!

Excuse me? Sorry but one last thing. Um... My art work comes out very... Well, messy looking. Any way you'd know what I'm doing wrong? My anatomy is pretty spot on but when it comes to shading and lighting it always seems to screw my pictures up. I don't know how to create that "glow" you've got there. This is painted digitaly, right? If so then did you have the shading layer underneath the color or above? Was the shading layer on the same layer as the colors or not or was it together with the lighting layer? Sorry for the spam.

First off, I'm glad you are able to appreciate the art, in spite of your distaste for the paring.

Second, you're fine. It's not spam, you just forgot to add some stuff. No big deal.

Finally, to answer your question, I believe I did the "glow" on the uppermost layer, above all the shadows. I started off with a nice bright yellow, fanning it out from the upper left corner. Then, at the very edge where the glow is brightest, I added a bit of white and blended it in. Because it's on the top, I had to decrease the opacity somewhat.

I've never taken any classes and have only been working with digital arts for about a year and a half so I don't know if the way I did it is the "correct" way, but it seemed to work out.

Hope that helps!

Ah! I see! That's actualy very helpful, thank you. Though I wonder, when you use shadowing is it all combined on one layer or are they separated too?

Oh, and hair gets its own separate shading and highlight layers too!

Oh good, glad I could help!

As far as shading, the method that seems to work best for me is as follows:

Skin shading gets its own layer, no matter how many characters. The only exception to this is when two characters are touching. Normally, when I do the shading, I use the selection tool so that I don't go outside the lines but if the characters are touching, sometimes you can mess up the shading on the other character, even when using the selection tool. Hope that makes sense.

I also use a separate layer to shade clothing. Same rule applies from above.

And finally, I use a separate layer for shading in the background. Depending on how detailed the background happens to be, more than one of these may be used as well. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask. Again I'm not a professional by any means, but I've managed to pick up a few things via trial and error.

This is your first attempt at drawing a tortoise? Wow, it looks great! I've tried drawing them before... I wasn't very good at it. XD Anyway, beautiful job on the artwork. It's lovely how the light shines on them.

Thanks so much! I'm glad you like it. And yup, this was my first time drawing a tortoise. I was a bit nervous about how it would turn out but I think I did okay. I did use a reference image though.
