Description
This is a front and back view of my new Fai costume X3The designs on my main coat were made by gradient dying fabric, and then using heat n bond to apply them after planning out how to layer and section the designs. The whole process took about 30 hours.
The staff was made by me, thanks to Utai Mitsumo for sharing her layered foam-board method! The gems are resin cast by me, and painted in the back w/ metallic blue. The gem is plastic painted w/ iridescent paints and attached with fishing line. It's my first big prop, and it took over 40 hours to complete @_@
Wig styled by Kichara aka Danger Zone Productions!

Hey! IT LOOKS MAGNIFICENT, I really hope that mine will look even half as good for my convention in February, hahah.
QUESTION, though, did you hem the design on the back at all? Or did you just kind of BAM heatnbonded it? Without doing anything at all to the edges? And is it fraying at all?
(And I'm working on my jems on my staff too, how did the resin deal work? I've only been able to find resin for about thirty dollars a go, and it doesn't even include the molds. Was it difficult? )

Sorry for the late reply, I just saw this comment!
I didn't finish the edges on the heat n bond at all - I was worried that doing a satin stitch would ruin the gradient dye effect (since the thread wouldn't have the gradient) It doesn't fray on the edges though! I used a cotton and then really ironed the heck out of it so it fused completely with the heat n bond, so then it doesn't fray once it's cut out and applied.
Casting the resin gems wasn't very difficult! I was lucky and had a friend teach me though. You can order resin kits online, or they have smaller ones at Micheal's for around $10. Paint trays make awesome molds, especially those round white 99cent ones XD
Good luck!

It's fine! I'm glad that you responded! ^^
THANK YOU SO MUCH, this reaaaaaally helps me out, SO MUCH. Just a plan cotton? I've been hearing about satins or the such.... I've never used heatnbond, so this will be an experience, but thanks for the help!
Really? I went to the cheap art store near me, and it was thirty dollars for a can. >< I hate the Micheals near us. But I'll check it out, thanks!!!
My Dad suggested resin to me, and then I've seen it on a lot of tutorials.
Thanks!

Your welcome! Easy Cast is the best type! They sell a small box at Micheal's that comes with the resin mix and hardener. The instructions are really helpful too. (The box looks like this [link] )

Thank you! Thoughhh... I've wasted time, and I don't think I'll be able to get it in time. (And it doesn't help that we're in a blizzard with 10-20 more inches to come... >< )

Oh wow!!! I used the same method for my Fai coat design!! I somewhat regretted it after the first dozen hours XD Yours turned out amazingly clean, though :3 What did you use to cut the designs?

Oooh thanks! Yours looks really pretty! X3 I just used heat n bond on some fabric I had gradient dyed and then drew my designs out on the back and cut them out with regular fabric scissors. It was kind of a nightmare, but I'm happy I did it lol

Hello Fai, if I remember correctly you cast your own jewels for your staff?
I was just wondering if you could give me a little info, I need to make two or three pieces for my Sakura staff if I can't find them elsewhere. ^^-

Yeah my Sakura and I both cast our gem thingies out of resin. You can buy small bottles of the mix at Micheal's Crafts and paint trays make awesome molds. The kind we used is called Cast N Craft. It comes in a box with two bottles of mix inside.
If you're able to find it you can email me if you want for more info on how it works! (fluffypyoko@hotmail.com) It's surprisingly easy! Our friend Carolan taught us how.

Thank you! It'll be easier than trying to find premade gems that are the right size, for sure.
If I have any questions I will e-mail you. Thank you so much! And I can't stop saying it, I love your coat. X3

Awesome thank you so much. By the way, how did you get the color of your gems?
Was there a certain type of coloring you used?

They sell resin dye kits, right there with the mix. I used a little blue, and then painted the backs of the gems with metallic blue paint too. Painting the back of them can make them look nice and vibrant!

Well if I use Easy Cast then would it be an issue to use resin dye kits?
I saw on the side of the box, that they sell Easy Cast dye kits, but not at the Michael's I went to and live by.
And I will definitely paint the back. <3

You should be able to use any sort of resin dye, but making clear ones and just painting the back works really well by itself! X3

Well I'm going to mess around with the Easy Cast today, I bought some already. And I'll see about dye soon.
Thank you again, I can't wait to make the gems for my staff. ^^-
