Description
OCs Abby and Zen. Collaboration with my dear derp Fan-the-little-demon
Their story takes place before and after the Xcom wins (Xcom2WOTC). They basically just walk and talk for the most part. Abby lives and works in one of the Cities. She's not resistance. Zendrahs Tek is an ADVENT Elite Officer, and he's sorta chill. He's also a war criminal, murderer and well... ADVENT been there done that type (ex) resistance hunter, can't have all the sunshine and bunnies right.
I guess they are my way of coping with how EVIL Xcom is (kidding, we all love the pain amirite?).
You can read the short companion ficlet of what's up:
Confrontation
Walking down the stairs of city’s metro station, Abby reassured herself that she’s just being paranoid, maybe a little tense. The incident from the previous evening was a little unpleasant but nothing happened, right? She got home, nobody kicked the door in in the middle of the night to arrest her, she got up this morning in her normal daily routine, got on the train and she’s off to work, which is just a few minutes down the block. Everything is A-OK.
Absorbed in her thoughts, she nearly missed the bulk of a figure slowly coming her way. It materialized in her peripheral vision into a very distinct red accented armor of an ADVENT Officer and she froze on the spot. A deer in the headlights, as was the old world saying, felt very accurate at that moment. There was this split second hesitation in the Officer’s movement upon seeing her stop. He made a slight gesture, lifting his arm of the rifle as he approached her.
“No need to be alarmed, miss.” he said with that heavily modulated voice all ADVENT soldiers shared. But if her ears weren’t playing tricks on her that was definitely English she was hearing and that was new. The thing is they could definitely understand and speak many human languages; they were people after all, right? But they generally preferred to use the language of the Elders. And it always made them sound so angry. But then again they were usually just barking orders, they did not bother to casually talk to people as much as the Speaker would have you believe. Abby wondered there for a second, though, why do they modulate their voice when you can see their mouth? It was just a little weird. Speaking of which, she noticed, there was a very prominent scar running across the visible part of the Officer’s face, slashing right through his lips down the covered chin. And oh shit it was him.
He regarded her with a little side glance of his eye-less helmet.
“I wanted to talk to you about the… collision, from yesterday.” He paused mid-sentence as if considering the right word.
It all came back to her in an instant, like watching a damn film.
So, a collision, yes, that. Definitely what she would call the full speed face-plant into an ADVENT soldier, effectively tackling him to the ground, while all the troops in the vicinity got triggered by their officer being potentially under attack. Did she even mention the tiny incident? It would be funny really, considering his size, easily towering over her, if it wasn’t extremely dangerous and stupid. You know, the rule of thumb around the city centers was simple: do not to get on ADVENT’s shitlist. If you manage that, you can go about your day, and your life and your work and not worry about a thing. You fuck up, one way or another, and there was a lot of ways you could do that, and poof, you disappear never to be seen again. And oh there were juicy rumors circulating.
Retrospectively though, in her defense, what happened was really just an unfortunate accident, no malicious intent on her part. She was running late for the train, waving at her colleague over something, looking behind, she wasn’t paying attention until it was too late. There was a flash of white as she made contact head on with a solid object and then she found herself on top of a very dumbfounded ADVENT Officer in red armor lying sprawled on the pavement. Scrambling away in her bewilderment she got quickly halted by more soldiers that swiftly appeared on the scene. The Officer gathered himself off the ground, dusting off and checking his rifle with added dramatic effect. By that time she might have been mumbling something about how sorry she was, she was not sure really, the brain got a little weird and you say all sorts of stuff to save yourself from impending doom. At some point, when he was finished with the throughout inspection of the damage done, he snapped his head in her direction, and the funny thing is that she remembers that part quite vividly. She took a step or two back only to bump into the trooper behind her (unfortunately not tackling that one to the ground). The Officer approached her, slow and deliberate, with a begrudging snarl, definitely adding to the intimidation factor. She noticed the scar on his face then. He stopped, looking down at her, for what might have been five seconds in his perception of time, but for her it felt like a damn lifetime. That Officers are big, scary guys is an understatement. The intensity of his presence eventually dissipated, he made a small sigh-like sound, his shoulders seemed to relax a little in a very subtle resigned gesture. He took a step back and without a word made an arm motion that she identified as a cue to get out there. Then she ran for her life all the way to the metro station and home. And the rest was history, a very vivid one, up until now when he was standing in front of her again, talking about the unfortunate collision.
She let out a quiet “Oh.”
Her body language was probably very obvious, he made that thoughtful head movement again, considering what to say.
“You are not in trouble, miss. This block is one of my routine patrol areas. I saw you, you seemed agitated and I wanted you to know that we both were at fault yesterday. I was not paying attention as I should have and when I turned around it was too late to react to your...,” he paused again and she’d swear she saw the corner of his mouth twitch.
“Well, it was actually quite an entertaining occurrence, if I’m being honest. There’s not much going on around here, you see. Patrols get tedious. So, there, you don’t need to worry. Just don’t go running around the city tackling more ADVENT troopers, some might take it personally.” Yes, subtle, but definitely a smile. And his voice, even with all that weird alien tint, changed slightly. Sarcasm maybe? She was not sure if it was surprising or horrifying. They always seemed just serious business and no fun at all. And hold on a minute; did he just call her entertaining?
“Thank you, I think?” No really, what do you say to that?
He looked to the distance and then back to her.
“Your workplace is down the street, is it not? May I walk with you?”
“Uhm, okay.” Not knowing how to counter such a strange request, she turned eyeing him suspiciously and set on in the direction of her office building. He matched her pace but didn’t say anything else. She wasn’t sure if she should start a conversation, worried she might say something stupid or inappropriate, so they walked side by side in silence. That must have been quite a strange sight to behold.
ADVENT troopers standing in various places around the street and buildings observed them as they walked past, probably assessing the danger she might be posing to their captain, who did not react to them in any way as far as she could tell by her quick sideway glance. She felt slightly self-conscious and uncomfortable. Was it some sort of a mind game at the end of which there’s a prison van waiting to haul her ass somewhere never to be seen again? Because she didn’t have a slightest clue what to think of this weirdness, and why did this guy decided to be her escort for the day.
A couple of awkward minutes later, they arrived to the office building entrance. She paused, standing nervously, waiting, she didn’t even know for what.
“Have a nice day, miss.” He nodded slightly and continued casually walking away.
Abby stared at the Officer’s back for a minute trying to figure out what the hell just happened.
