Description
A tutorial/walkthrough on how I paint digitally, since I've had quite a few people ask! This is long overdue, really, but I hope that it proves informative/useful to some of you guys, and sorry for my wordyness! I can't make any sense unless I'm trying to tell a story. ):For those who don't know, Oekaki is a browser-based (online) drawing system where you draw via an Oekaki applet (such as Chibipaint, PaintBBS or ShiPainter, which is what I used for this tutorial here) and post it onto an "Oekaki Board" (BBS, bulletin board system) for fellow users to see and comment on! Many oekaki applets have the fancy feature of recording Animations, which are stroke-by-stroke replays of the painting of a picture. I have an animation of the painting used for this tutorial, check it out!
To get pressure sensitivity in Oekaki, download the JTablet Plugin!
Any comments, critiques or notes gladly welcomed, it's been a while since I've done a tutorial. ...And yes, I still put together all my stuff in MS Paint. Shhhh I'm a very simple person. >_>;;
Anyway, I hope that this will be of use to some of you, and see you in [PART TWO: THE WALKTHROUGH] !

Ahahahah, ohmygosh I'm so glad that I could be of help! Β It definitely helped me a lot to realize that lineart actually just made painting harder, so I'm glad my tutorial could be of use! Β C: Β Good luck!! Β

Ooooooh, thank you very much for sharing your experience. I'm a "pencil person" and just recently figured that HOW big mental step is to break away from lines and go with painting blocks. In black and white I manage to replace lines with shadow-light blocks but when I also have to add colours I feel lost all of a sudden. XD
And yeah that "zig-zag" was another problem that I didn't know for a while and that picking wrong colours will make it bland ugly and you have to include more saturated colours inbetween. (Ah I wonder if it made sense ^^' )
Anyway, thanks again, it was a good read and it was nice to see it in breakdowns why dodge doesn't work, makes sense now.

Awwwwwwwwwwwwwww man, I'm just so super-freakin' happy to hear that it helped, that my silly ramblings-on could be of use-!
I just recently picked up a regular old wooden B pencil, and even that helps, before I used a 0.7 mechanical pencil so I was still being waaaaayy too obsessive with my lines, it really does make a difference what kind of marks you're making on the page-!
I'm glad if this could be of help though, seriously!

I totally agree with the pretty lineart thing. It's actually something I still struggle with, honestly. For years my art's been defined by the lines and the details that when I'd get around to painting, I'd fumble around trying to create believable forms. I think clean lineart works well for certain kinds of art, but if you plan on painting over the lines, no point in spending hours cleaning them up lol.

Urgh yeah, it's still a huge problem for me as well (my "lineart-crisis" never really ended, hahahah xD;; ) and I still just have no idea what to do with clean lines... ghhh. ;-;

Oh my Gosh Laitma, THANKS! ^0^
I'm not to good when it comes to painting and this will help a great deal >w<
Especially the color part, I always knew I couldn't use the 'straight line' in them, haven't used them in other digital drawings too, but I didn't exactly know what to do in paintings^^
I cracked up at Luke a bit xD
Again, thank you SO much! This must've been a lot of work^^

Ahhhhhhhh, a coupla days to put it together, n-not too bed... u_u;; If only it was as easy to do a tutorial as it is to paint a picture, hahah! That took me less than 2 hours!
But ahhhhhhh really, I-I just hope that this helps?!?? ;-; Thaaank you, and good luck with your paintings~!
