Description
Figured I might as well post this, since I wasted err, spent about 5 hours trying to make it look less terrible... yeeeah, I'm stubborn in the dumbest ways...;;Anyway. Really wanted to draw a more realistic portrait of Seth showing his current colorscheme/design (orange eyes, black hair), and uuuuuh just might possibly be entertaining the thought of drawing portraits now of all the Iris characters, though that really doesn't seem like a very good (or feasible) idea to me right now... 9v9; (Though, god knows I could use the facial anatomy practice, and hey, that's what summer vacation is for, right...? )
Anyway, Seth! Our half-breed Angel protagonist, though he's really not very charismatic when we meet him (nor was he ever, then again). Just a burnt-out, tired, insecure guy with some crappy health problems and a generally overwhelming lack of faith in himself. Kind of lives a hollow in-between-paths life when the novel picks up; he both wants to leave the dying city he currently works in, but repeatedly sabotages his own hopes with his pessimism. Kind of a loser, really.
Not really satisfied with this because it's not quite how I wanted him to look, but I guess that for now it'll do; I'm too sick of working on this any more with all its icky flaws, ugh. (Yeah I know his eyes are--graghhghghhh)
For some reason I like the lineart a lot better: [link]
It just, it catches what I wanted him to look like a lot more, but I spent at least 2 hours now futzing with the painting and trying to get it to match and failing, so I give up now... =w=;;
Anyway. Back to work. Will return to the world of the living in a month!

How you paint on an Oekaki program without all those convenient little sliders and other stuff in Photoshop is beyond me. o_O
Hm... I think someone below pointed this out, but his nose is a bit too long. The shadows on the sides of his nose aren't quite right--the values look too dark, and the edges are too sharp (on either side of the bridge of his nose). The light source doesn't read too well, either; I know it's coming somewhere from his left, but besides that it's a little ambiguous.
Did any of that make any sense? I'm terrible at describing things in words. 8(
Does Oekaki allow you to flip the canvas? 'Cos I know I couldn't do without that feature. I need to hold up a mirror to my traditional stuff to see those little mistakes I missed, haha.
Of course summer vacation is for anatomy practice. Not for silly things like studying Orgo. *cough*

Ah, nonono, it made sense, yeah. I really should've used a reference for this, ahahaha... but yeah, I'll work on it. Need to study more faces, study more bodies... it never ends. @v@;;
B-B-But, but oekaki has a slider for opacity and a slider for brush size, and that's really all you ever need! D: And, yeah, it has a flip option, but for this picture it somehow didn't help me....... :/
Thank you, though! I'll keep at it!

I get you, man. I'm going to try for Life Drawing next semester so hopefully I will actually know what I'm talking about when it comes to anatomy.
I had so many problems with drawing the figure when we had to do it for painting because I didn't have those handy Photoshop features. So if my colors were wrong, they were wrong and I had to re-mix my entire palette and aaaaaarrrrghgghh so many hours of frustration.
I have a love affair with Photoshop, I totally do.

Awmaaaaan, sweet! Well, if I don't get into sequential art then I hope I get into life drawing! In retrospect, maybe I should be taking the one before trying the other..... >>;
But, hahaha, I know how you feel about not being able to fix your colors. I get that all the time with traditional, too. That and not being able to add in white later with watercolors. 8/

If you do end up getting into Life Drawing, I'm taking it with Mary Arthur. My painting teacher recommended her; my teacher says she literally makes you draw the body from the inside out. Which sounds awesoooooooooooooome.
I know right? It's not even the "undo" button I miss the most; it's the color picker and the color adjustment abilities. 8(

Stubborn? BAH! You say stubborn. I say...commited to quality.
I toy with the idea of agreeing with all those crazy, inaccurate things you say about your pictures. Just to teach you a lesson. But then I realise that you would just agree and think they were true because someone else thought the same.
So instead I'll just, once again, say you are crazy and that your opinion of your art is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay off. WAY off. Perhaps because you spent so long on this, you lost some objectivity. That's understandable.

I think I need to give up illustrating for a while and just practice, sketch sketch sketch bodies and faces over and over again until I get it right. ;v;

But do you know what you want to achieve?
If you don't have a clear idea of what you want to accomplish then you'll just end up running around in circles. Saying 'better' isn't really enough. That's not specific.

You CAN do a lot of those things. If not all of them. So what you should've said is 'get better'. The way you desribe it you can't do any of those things and that's not true.

...........Y'know, G, I've thought this line over a long time, and I think it's really something I needed. I lose sight of it a lot, you know? I get really focused on the product, the finished deal, that I forget it's all just a journey, and I really shouldn't have such hard goals set so far away.
....Thanks, man. I think I needed that.

You need to remind yourself that there will be other pictures. Every picture you do isn't the last one and won't be the thing you are judged on. Once a pic is done then you move forward to the next one. You take what you've learnt and move on. If you fall backwards that's okay too. Because you're always moving forward.

Laitma In reply to The-G [2011-05-29 20:36:29 +0000 UTC]
You're totally right G, but I get so caught up in my pictures! I have very specific images I always want to draw, I plan them down in my head, but often enough I don't even START them because I know I don't yet have the skill to draw them the way I want to (perspective, lighting, etc) so I don't, and I guess I just get frustrated when pictures don't come out the way they were planned... 9v9;;

You can always redraw them later when you feel more capable of doing what you intended. If you draw it now then you can just look at it as a work in progress and redo later when you think you've learnt more.

Hmm... I'd have to agree about the lines, too. The slightly-off facial anatomy is more obvious in the painted one... I think you put the highlights in the wrong places? I don't know what you were going for in terms of the mental image, but the sketch looks more 'correct' to me.
...and I think his nose is too long.

Want to really just practice some stuff for a while, work on anatomy a lot more... I should probably push "productivity" to the side and stop trying to complete pretty finished pictures, maybe. Haha.

Yeah, if you want to work on anatomy doing quick sketches is best-- that way you can get a lot more figures done in the same time it would take to make one finished piece. It's the sketch stage that's truly valuable when learning anatomy; finishing a picture won't really make you better.

circusheart [2011-04-21 02:53:08 +0000 UTC]
I like the lineart better too (which is kinda bitch, seeing as you worked decently long on this.) It just seems that with the colors you lose some of the illumination and shadow that is subtle but very powerful in the lineart. Which... is surprising? Sometimes less is more. The colors in the skin are very nice but when you squint at it, take a step back, etc, there's not as much contrast as you probably saw when working on it up close. Making it darker could help a lot-- not everywhere, but in select places. Also the hair could use some lightening on the top, which you hint at in the drawing.
Your rendering of the skin is quite nice and your attention to light and direction of muscles is spot on... just needs more contrast, I think.

Laitma In reply to circusheart [2011-04-24 19:29:39 +0000 UTC]
Ahahaha, naw, it's cool, I know, it just kinda works out like that sometimes, the lineart's fine but somehow painting over it just ruins it...
Your note on contrast is interesting, though; I'll keep it in mind! I kind wanted to soften it up though, since another friend of mine told me he looked more gaunt in the painted version, and that it had to do with how I shaded... I need to pull out references again and actually just draw them, jeez.
But yeah, thank you hun~ <3
