Description
After Dragon Age etc, I decided to try Bioware's other RPG series, Mass Effect. I'm almost done with the first one and bought the second tonight, and wanted to try my hand at painting the default male Shepard (who I'm using).

I thought it was going to be easy.

See, the character is designed to look like male model Mark Vanderloo, right? So I thought "great, tons of references!", and there are, but that wasn't what was so hard.
The crew cut hair was! OMG I had no idea painting stubble on a head could be so hard! It gave me no end of trouble, and the only reason I didn't just give him a damn helmet was because I thought that would be HARDER.

I modelled the armour vaguely off of some found in the game and used a reference of a game gun for the pistol.

This image was also challenging, because I decided to try and paint in black and white and then later add colour. (Usually I just paint straight colour.) That was freaking hard too, so I only did it with the face.

As for the lazer beams and smoking holes in the wall, they were afterthoughts. I don't think I pulled off the "middle of a firefight" effect I wanted to, but you gotta experiment, right?

I intended the image to look like he's taking cover against a wall after having his gun overheat (something that happens to me at the most annoying times). The background is made up, not really based on anything, but I was thinking of the Citadel Wards because of the astro vista view and the screens and signs and stuff.

There are bits of this image I'm happy with, and others that I'm not, but all in all, it was a learning experience.
